SEASON ROUND UP
We are so looking forward to our 39th season of bringing dark and cutting-edge
theatre to Edmonton- and beyond- audiences!
But before we move forward, we’d love to take a proud look back at the four
plays that made up our last season...
We opened with Bitches & Money 1878 by Brit playwright Martin Henshell.
This riotous shoot-em-up, lush Victorian time travel caper of a gang gone
wrong saw the debuts of three talented young local performers (Laura Gillespie,
Ben Gorodetsky, and Andréa Jorawsky) and kept the audience guessing with
its backstabbing and double crosses.
In an important collaboration with Edmonton’s French language theatre,
L’UniTheatre, we were thrilled to present another Canadian premiere- Jeffrey
Hatcher’s Mercy of a Storm or de Plein Fouet Dans la Tempete (in a translation
by Gisele Villeneuve). This cool noir romantic thriller unfolded in an elegant
poolhouse as a femme fatale and an insurance saleman (are there any other
pairings in film noir?) tangled through their romantic history in search of
redemption and reconciliation. And it was performed on alternate nights in
both official languages! Brian Dooley starred opposite Gianna Vacirca- who
was nominated for a Sterling award for her leading lady turn. The show was
also nominated for set design by Trevor Schmidt, and multi-media design by
Matt Shuurman and Adam Tsuyoshi Turnbull.
2013/2014: SEASON REVIEW
Our season ended with the menacing Contractions by Mike Bartlett, starring
an NLT favorite, Linda Grass and newcomer Nimet Kanji. This tense and blackly
comic board room battle between two women turns sour quickly and escalates
(devolves?) into something so outrageous it is almost true-to-life. The striking
simplicity of the high-gloss world of the play was shown off to great effect in
Adam Tsuyoshi Turnbull’s Sterling nominated lighting design.
One of our 2012/2013 hits was the wildly popular 6.0: How Heap and Pebble Took
on the World and Won. It was a multiple Sterling nominee, and the irreplaceable
original cast (Amber Borotsik and Jesse Gervais) were invited to be a part of the
season at Lunchbox Theatre in Calgary, as well as being presented as part of One
Yellow Rabbit’s highly lauded High Performance Rodeo. And it won a Betty Award
for Choreography! We were thrilled to travel to another theatre town and share
NLT's work with the welcoming community there!
There’s more in store! Turn the page to begin the new journey that we have
planned for you.... we look forward to seeing you at the shows this year- and
we have plenty of new and exciting opportunities to talk about what you see,
and feel, and think....

BANANA BAG & BODICE
BANANA BAG & BODICE is a
Brooklyn-based collaborative
of artists/technicians who make
live-event-theater-play-show-things.
“The original design for the pod looked like
that trailer. So yes, there’s a lot of overlap.
It all starts subliminally, and then your real
life always comes up and comes out.”
Banana Bag & Bodice mashes together
original writing, music composition and
collective design in order to expose and
celebrate the inspiring awkwardness of
being a human. The design is inspired
by the objects and material thrown in
to the theatrical dumpsters of midtown
Manhattan. Banana Bag & Bodice’s elastic
approach to creating live theatre has one
common goal- to entertain and confound
through thoughtful provocation.
“The show actually came out of not
being pregnant, and avoiding it and not
talking about having a kid,” adds Jelliffe.
“We finished doing Beowulf and I wanted
it to just be the two of us, so I asked him
to write it for just two.” She turns to Craig,
accusingly. “Then it went weird and dark,
and you’re dead and I’m pregnant!”
The author shrugs furry shoulders.
“Happy anniversary?”
SCIENCE FICTION DOUBLE FEATURE:
BANANA BAG & BODICE CRAMS ITSELF
INTO SPACE//SPACE - BY HELEN SHAW
But while Space//Space orbits further
out into the absurdist reaches, the text
actually spirals, simultaneously, in toward
autobiography. Jelliffe’s pregnancyis just one
case of life imitating art. Claustrophobia has
been a hallmark of the pair’s relationship.
Jelliffe and Craig got together while on a
three-and-a-half-month children’s-theater
tour. “We did the whole East Coast, just the
two of us in a van,” recalls Craig.
Now the couple is moving into yet another
tiny space, Williamsburg’s Collapsable Hole.
“It’s our home,” avers Craig simply. Banana
Bag’s first New York hit, Panel.Animal,
happened there, and Jelliffe has been happy
to note that the pod fits snugly into its
confines. “People are amazing,” she says.
“They have imaginations…they fill in the
space for us.” There is, of course, another
concern. As the two of them swelter and
get back to work, they both ponder the
air-conditioning at the Hole. “What
should you tell people?” asks Craig,
before answering himself. “Tell them:
Space is cold.”

Washington University, Northland Pioneer
College, Fountain Valley School and the
Arizona Commission on the Arts. "The Pink
Unicorn," has been invited to perform twice
in New York City, on Theatre Row as part of
the United Solo Theatre Festival, where it
won a "Best Storytelling" award, and then
again at the Left Out Festival at Stage Left
Studio. The script was published by Indie
Theater Now early this year.
ELISE FORIER EDIE, PERFORMING THE PINK UNICORN AT CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN 2013
FROM ELISE FORIER EDIE
"The Pink Unicorn was inspired by
actual events that took place in 2011.
At that time, I was living in a small,
conservative town, Ellensburg, WA.
The local Presbyterian minister delivered
a sermon (which is recreated in the play,
tortured logic and all), wherein he likened
supporting the gay community to "being
a Nazi." He exhorted his congregation
to reject the USA Presbyterian Church's
decision to allow openly gay ministers
to be ordained, and shortly afterwards
they did just that, splitting with national
leadership, and forbidding openly gay
people from joining the church. This
same discussion happened in multiple
Presbyterian Churches throughout the
country, with the same result.
At the same time, a nearby high school
principal rejected an application for the
Gay and Straight Alliance (GSA) to be
included as a school club. When students
protested, he suspended all school clubs
and activities. Similar tactics to block
the GSA were used by other school
districts, throughout the country,
around the same time.
I started asking myself, "How do people
get to thinking like this? How can I talk
to them? What are they afraid of?"
So I wrote a play about the treatment
of young LGBTQ citizens in small American
towns, from the point of view of a
conservative Christian parent. The play
is meant to entertain audiences, and to
stimulate discussion about gender identity,
civil rights, and youth. It attempts to
create common ground for conservative
and liberal audiences, for parents and
youth, to come together and talk about
gender identity, homosexuality, equality
and social justice.
As to the intermission--yes! Of course!
Smush both acts into one. As a performer,
I wanted the option to pee and drink some
water before I tackled the emotional
minefield that is Mama, Junior and Earl's
death. Plus, American audiences have
horrifically short attention spans. But if
your actress and your audiences are up for
the whole haul, it certainly works as a long
one act." - ELISE FORIER EDIE

BATTLE FOR THE LIMELIGHT
The first ever Battle for the Limelight fundraiser was held on Saturday, September
6, 2014 as an “Amazing Race” style scavenger hunt. Northern Light Theatre was
delighted to host thirteen teams of theatre artists with representation from Concrete
Theatre, FAVA (Film & Video Arts Society of Alberta), Free Will Players, Grindstone
Theatre, Nextfest, Promise Productions, Rapid Fire Theatre, Teatro La Quindicina,
Theatre Alberta, Theatre Network, Workshop West theatre as well as our own three
teams- Team Arrgghh (Trevor’s NLT staff team), The Limelighters (Lori’s NLT board
team) and Doodle and the Noodles (the NLT patron/ audience team).
The Battle for the Limelight was organized to not only raise funds for Northern Light
Theatre’s 2014-2015 season but also as a fundraiser for the participating theatre
companies who were encouraged to gather their own donations. We are thrilled
to announce that in addition to NLT’s funds, the thirteen other Edmonton theatre
companies involved raised over $20,000.00 in combined pledges for their own
benefit. Way to the go, Edmonton theatre community!
The race day served up nothing but clear skies and bright sunshine as the teams raced
all over Old Strathcona deciphering clues, solving riddles, and competing in challenges
such as icing and selling cupcakes, racing through the Farmer’s Market, busking with
Taiko drums, copying a Jason Blower painting and even eating a 1000 year old egg (!)
The race concluded in a barbeque and party for the whole community as the winners
were announced.

SUMMER PERFORMANCE CAMP
For the past nine years, Northern Light Theatre has been dedicated to providing
young theatre artists aged 4-17 a glimpse into the professional theatre world
with our Performance Camps for Young People. This past August, Northern Light
Theatre was delighted to present “The Piper.”
Led by accomplished Theatre Artist and arts educator, Maralyn Ryan, our troupe
of young aspiring performers were given the opportunity to explore singing, acting
and movement as they rehearse an original play adapted from a significant time
in local history. Other classes included improvisation, theatre games and acting
techniques which stoke the imagination and enhance ensemble work.
Past summers ptoductions have included “The Prince & The Pauper,”
“The Hobbit,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Peter Pan,” “Robin Hood,” “Beauty and Beast,”
“Sherlock Holmes and the Emerald of Alcazar,” “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and
“The Emperor’s New Clothes.”

KRISTI HANSEN AS CHRISTINA
TREVOR SCHMIDT AS PHILIPPE
CHRISTINA / PHILIPPE
CHRISTINA, QUEEN OF SWEDEN
18 December, 1626 – 19 April, 1689
Queen regnant of Sweden from 1633
to 1654, using the titles of Queen of
Swedes, Goths, and Vandals, Grand
Princess of Finland, and Duchess of
Ingria, Estonia, Livonia and Karelia.
As the heiress presumptive, at the
age of six she succeeded her father
on the throne of Sweden.
"she walked like a man, sat and rode like
a man, and could eat and swear like the
roughest soldiers". "she wears men's shoes and her voice
and nearly all her actions are masculine". "was sunburnt, and she looked like a
sort of Egyptian..., very strange, and
more alarming than attractive".
"completely hairy and had a coarse
and strong voice". "neither Male nor Hermaphrodite, as some
People in the World have pass'd me for".
"...painted a lesbian, a prostitute, a
hermaphrodite, and an atheist" by
her contemporaries, though "in that
tumultuous age, it is hard to determine
which was the most damning label."
PHILIPPE I, DUKE OF ORLÉANS
21 September, 1640 – 9 June, 1701
The youngest son of Louis XIII of France
and his wife, Anne of Austria. His older
brother was Louis XIV, le roi soleil.
"prettiest child in the world".
“he displayed a 'lively intelligence'
early on...”
“Queen Anne was observed to address
Philippe by such nicknames as 'my little girl'
and encouraged him to dress in feminine
clothing even as a young man – a habit he
would retain all his life”.
Called “The silliest woman who ever lived",
a reference to his effeminacy...
“As a young man, Philippe would
dress up and attend balls and parties
in female attire, for example, dressed
as a shepherdess”.
“Unabashedly effeminate and preferentially
homosexual, he nonetheless fulfilled
his dynastic duty by marrying twice and
begetting several children. Through the
children of his two marriages, Philippe
became an ancestor of most modern-day
Roman Catholic royalty, giving him the
nickname of 'the grandfather of Europe'...”

MEET OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The NLT Board meets once a month to receive financial and artistic updates from the
staff and provides the company with support and fundraising – but above all, the Board
is supportive of our vision for the future. They are proud of the distinctive nature of the
company. They are brave individuals that believe in our philosophy of artistic risk. They
trust our vision as we trust their input, advice and guidance.
To find out how you can join this outstanding team please give us a call at (780) 471-1586
or email us at [email protected].
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

PRODUCTION MANAGER
ADAM TSUYOSHI TURNBULL
Under the creative artistic vision of Trevor Schmidt, with full support of the administrative team
and the board, Northern Light Theatre is dedicated to producing intimate and affecting work that
speaks to the modern audience of the urban human condition, the failure to find security and the
loss of the dreams held by all for love and happiness.
NLT values its position on the far end of the spectrum within our local theatre community, and
feels it has a unique role to play as an outspoken and purposefully controversial not-for-profit
theatre. We hope to make contact and develop ongoing relationships and partnerships with
similar-minded companies within our province and country in the years to come.
WAYS TO CONTRIBUTE
LIKE NORTHERN LIGHT THEATRE? WANT TO HELP US CONTINUE TO DO WHAT WE DO?
THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS YOU CAN HELP!
DID YOU KNOW That Northern Light Theatre is a not for profit and charitable organization?
One of the main ways you can help us continue to bring you quality live theatre is to donate.
Every little bit helps! Please visit our website at www.northernlighttheatre.com where you
will see a link to our Canada Helps page. You can donate easily and securely from wherever
you are and receive a tax receipt in the process!
BUY A SUBSCRIPTION The best way to support NLT is by subscribing to our season.
Not only does that help us, you get a guaranteed ticket to every production, at a
discounted price, AND we’ll even reserve a seat for you! To subscribe please give
us a call at 780-471-1586. Even if we’re part way through the season, give us a call!
You can become a subscriber at any time.
BECOME A VOLUNTEER We rely on bingo and casino revenue to be able to do what we do,
and we need volunteers to help us out. Volunteering for a bingo or casino is a great way to
get a free ticket to a show and to meet NLT fans and staff!
BECOME A BOARD MEMBER We are looking for passionate people from all walks of life to
volunteer for our board of directors. Allow our creativity to flourish by helping to facilitate an
environment that ensures management strength and financial stability. Call us at 780-471-1586
