What is a deciduous forest?

mers 2nd Level Consumers 1st Level Consumers Herbivorous Consumers Primary Producers ü A forest where the trees
shed their leaves
ü Occurs in regions that
experiences seasonal
changes
ü Europe, New Zealand,
Australia, northeast Asia
Climate
ü 30” – 60” of rain fall
ü Seasonal changes in
temperature
ü Plants lose their leaves
in order to survive cold
winters
ü Animals migrate or
hibernate for winter
ü Average temperature
75°F
ü Fertile soil due to
decomposition

Abiotic Factors are non-living
components of the biome
including rocks, mountains,
water, and air. Biotic Facto rs
are living components of the
biome.
These two parts of the biome
interact with each other. Abiotic
Factors such as water and
temperature impact the plant and
animal life of an ecosystem. If
rain levels are low and
temperature is high Biotic
Factors such as plants and
animals may have to suffer
through droughts.
Soil is an Abiotic Factor that
both impacts and is impacted by
Biotic Facto rs. If it’s rich more
trees grow and the soil is further
enriched. Abiotic Factors
change and impact Biotic
Factors depending on season.
For example in the winter
Abiotic Factors such as the soil
and air are frozen which causes
leaves to drop and food sources
Deforestation
v Humans remove large
number of trees
v Reduces clean air
v If forest is not harvested
sustainably forest will
take decades to regrow
Acid Rain
v Acidic rain caused by
coal power plants and
burning fossil fuels
v Harms all living organism
in biome including trees
and animals
Habitat Loss
v Civilization encroaches
on forests
v Farming decreases
biodiversity of once
forested areas
