The Periodic Table Chapter 6 Section 6.1 Pgs. 174-176 Section 6.1 Development of the Modern Periodic Table Trace the development of the periodic table. Identify key features of the periodic table. The History of the Periodic Table While Dimitri Mendeleev was studying properties of the elements he noticed that physical and chemical properties of elements repeated in an orderly way when organized according to increasing atomic masses. He realized that these patterns can help identify undiscovered elements and predict their properties. This is called periodicity. Mendeleev’s first periodic table Periodicity The tendency for the properties of the elements to repeat or recur in an orderly way from row to row on the periodic table at regular intervals —like the appearance of Haley’s comet every 76 years Henry Moseley He arranged the periodic table according to increasing atomic numbers. By doing this he saw fewer irregularities Moseley’s periodic table is what is used today. The Modern Periodic Table This table was based on the Periodic Law, which states: that the chemical and physical properties of the elements repeat in a regular pattern when they are arranged in order of increasing atomic number. Parts to the Periodic Table Elements with similar properties fall within the same group or vertical column in the periodic table. As can be called a family. The horizontal rows of the periodic table are called periods. Information found on the Periodic Table The element’s: Atomic number Atomic mass Symbol of the Element Name of the Element Aliens Activity Nautilus shell has a repeating pattern. Look carefully at the drawings of the ‘aliens’. Organize all the aliens into a meaningful pattern. Aliens Lab Cards
