THE SOCIETY FOR PEDIATRIC RADIOLOGY 2017 Annual Meeting and Categorical Course May 16 - 20, 2017 The Westin Bayshore, Vancouver Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada “Children’s Imaging: Creating Change, Celebrating Success” Dear Colleagues, Welcome Message SPR 2017 Annual Meeting and Categorical Course Welcome to the 2017 meeting of The Society for Pediatric Radiology! Like a flowing river, our subspecialty grows and changes, sometimes slowly, others with great celerity. Several developments in the recent past promise to have a transformative impact on how we image children. Over the last five years the health care system has greatly increased in size and complexity, and we continue to navigate through a rapidly changing environment. Personalized medicine will modify who and why we image. Machine learning not only will help us with some routine tasks such as the determination of bone age, but also likely will become a major diagnostic help—hopefully smart machines will not replace us altogether! Imaging modalities until recently had remained relatively stable, but innovating advances in technology are also changing our practice. PET/MRI merges metabolic and anatomic depiction of disease like never before, and as more units are installed throughout North America, it is becoming a more widely available clinical tool. Sonography, arguably the most important imaging modality in pediatrics, is now expanding with the addition of contrast enhancement, elastography and 3D imaging. During this meeting, we are pleased to offer the opportunity to learn more about these new developments. The Neuhauser Lecture entitled “Roles for Imaging in the Age of Precision Medicine”, will be given by Dr. James Thrall, one of the most visionary leaders in Radiology. He will provide a perspective of the new focus of Radiology. As a former Radiologist-in-Chief at Massachusetts General Hospital and the President of the American College of Radiology, Dr. Thrall has an unparalleled perspective on the future of Radiology. This year we are thrilled to have Dr. Peter Burns, one of the world’s experts in contrast-enhanced sonography present the keynote lecture, “Ultrasound Imaging with Contrast Agents”. Contrast enhanced sonography is one of the most exciting developments in imaging, and one that already has changed imaging in Europe and is rapidly influencing changes in imaging throughout North America. continued We will have two concurrent categorical courses. Attendees will be able to choose between a broad review of multiple topics in Pediatric Radiology, as has been traditional in prior meetings, and a more specialized course similar to those sponsored throughout the year by the Society. The latter will focus on my favorite subject, pediatric musculoskeletal imaging. Musculoskeletal imaging has been transformed by cross-sectional imaging and is now a mature technology, a body of knowledge that needs to be disseminated. This year we attempted a new approach to the Sunrise Sessions by requesting suggestions for topics from the SPR membership. Our talented society members submitted great ideas, and we tried to incorporate as many of them as we could. We appreciate everyone’s suggestions! There will be half-day focused topic sessions organized by many of the committees of the SPR, addressing themes such as advances in PET/MRI and Nuclear Medicine, Neuroradiology, Interventional Radiology, and Ultrasound. The WFPI will host a session focused on global education. Year after year the World Federation matures into a multinational organization with increasing positive impact on the care of children. Continuing with educational tradition, concurrent scientific sessions will be incorporated as well as the successful 3D Read with the Experts Session and MR, CT and US Protocol Sessions. We will hold a three-day Radiographer’s Refresher Course, a great success last year. Finally, the Jeopardy Session will be a good opportunity for several prominent members of our society to embarrass themselves while we learn from them. The venue is extraordinary! The wonderful city of Vancouver not only has beautiful views of the ocean and the mountains but also is a vibrant place full of gorgeous parks, restaurants, and nightlife. I hope we will also have a chance to have a lot of fun. The Westin Hotel is in a fabulous location from which to embark on fun-filled adventures. The hotel has spacious conference rooms, and meeting areas full of natural light. The meeting will take place during the 60th anniversary of The Society for Pediatric Radiology. Our Society has defined our subspecialty, and has had a profound beneficial effect on the health of children. This society was built by the efforts of many outstanding and dedicated individuals. We will remember them and many fond moments from the Society’s past as we move proudly into a challenging future. It is important to reflect on the meaning of 60 years of meetings. We meet to grow, and we meet to connect. The SPR meetings have helped weave a community of pediatric radiologists in North America. The meetings have also been the forum for most of the developments of our subspecialty. We will celebrate these accomplishments. I wish to thank above all Angela Davis, who is the real brains, heart, and soul behind this meeting. The directors of the Refresher Courses and Sunrise Sessions, and of all the other events of the meeting have worked tirelessly, and deserve much gratitude. I hope this meeting, as in previous years, serves as a setting to bring us together and to inspire future directions of clinical imaging, education and research. Looking forward to the future, Diego Jaramillo, MD, MPH President and Program Director The Society for Pediatric Radiology General Information OBJECTIVES OVERVIEW OF SESSIONS The Society for Pediatric Annual Meeting and Categorical Course will provide pediatric and general radiologists with an opportunity to do the following: CATEGORICAL COURSES There are two exciting Categorical Course offerings to delegates this year, so the choices are rich! The courses are offered in parallel, with the first session on Monday a combined session for all attendees. The General Course is “The Other 10%”, referring to the extra knowledge that is gained only from experience, which we hope to pass on as “secrets of the experts”; this course will emphasize radiographs, and how advanced imaging has reinformed our interpretation of the “plain” film, the most used but likely most easily misinterpreted imaging study. The Subspecialty Course is devoted to the subtleties of advanced musculoskeletal imaging, where the tips and tricks offered can benefit the skills of even seasoned radiologists. 1. Summarize the most current information on state-of-the-art pediatric imaging and the practice of pediatric radiology. 2. Describe and apply new technologies and imaging findings for pediatric imaging. 3. Discuss trends in research and education concerning the care and imaging of pediatric patients. 4. Identify common challenges facing pediatric radiologists, and possible solutions. 5. Describe and apply basic principles for implementing quality and safety programs in pediatric radiology 6. Evaluate and apply means of minimizing radiation exposure during diagnostic imaging and image-guided therapy. 7. At the conclusion of the experience, participants should have an improved understanding of the technologies discussed, increasing awareness of the costs and benefits of diagnostic imaging in children and of ways to minimize risks, and an improved general knowledge of pediatric radiology worldwide. Ten of the sessions will offer Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs), with updated use of the always-engaging RSNA Diagnosis LiveTM software that can be accessed easily on any smartphone, tablet or computer. Be sure to bring your charged device to be able to participate electronically; SAMs credits can still be earned through paper submissions, however, should you not have an accessible device available. And don’t miss out on the fun of watching two teams of celebrity pediatric radiologists vie to be champions in the all-new Ped Rad Jeopardy featuring your hosts, Drs. George Bisset and Lane Donnelly! SUNRISE SESSIONS From Wednesday through Friday mornings from 7:00 to 8:20 am, there will be a series of concurrent sunrise sessions focusing on wide variety of state-of-the art imaging techniques including body MR, fetal MR, forensic imaging, ultrasound contrast, and ultrasound breast and thyroid imaging. Learn more about new methods of education in the teaching and learning through your own device session. Insights into the growing field of computer science will be discussed in the machine learning session. Issues with reconciling imaging, imagining and managing radiation dose will be highlighted in the Image Gently session. Learn more about diagnostic errors, peer review, and professionalism education in the quality and professionalism session. Check-in: 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time Check-out: 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time Why stay at the Conference Hotel? The official conference hotel is the center of conference activities. It is a quick trip to get to the sessions, it provides opportunities for networking with conference attendees and it makes it easy to return to your room. Aside from some of the more obvious, there are other reasons you may want to consider before you look at another hotel. The conference has contracted for a discounted group rate. In return for the use of the hotel’s sleeping rooms, the Society guarantees the Hotel that a certain percentage of attendees will stay in the Hotel. The Hotel generally discounts the rate for conference attendees from their normal charges. If the conference does not meet the contracted sleeping room commitment, the Hotel gets paid anyway. Unfilled rooms can cost the conference thousands of dollars. Not only do these financial penalties hurt the current year’s conference, but the next conference in the series cannot negotiate as beneficial a hotel contract. In both cases the registration fee is then under pressure to increase unreasonably. Please support the conference by staying at the hotel headquarters.
