Acanthosis

Diffuse hyperplasia and thickening of the epidermis as seen in
psoriasis.
Acne vulgaris
(acne = point or peak, vulgar = common, is = condition of)
Chronic inflammatory disease with pustular eruptions of the
skin that usually occur in or near the sebaceous glands.
Albinism
(albin = white, ism = state or condition of)
Absence of pigments. A person with albinism (an albino) has
white skin and hair due to the inability to form melanin.
Alopecia
(alopec = baldness, ia = pertaining to)
Absence of hair.
Alopecia areata
(alopec = baldness, ia = pertaining to, areat/o = occurring in
patches)
Bald patches that may re-grow.
Alopecia totalis
(alopec = baldness, ia = pertaining to)
Loss of all hair due to autoimmune condition. Hair may re-grow
after some years.
Alopecia universalis

Total loss of hair on all parts of the body.
Anhydrosis

Lack of sweating.
Carbuncle
Infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue composed of a
cluster of furuncles.

Scar left by a healed wound.

Blackhead – formed by build up of sebum and keratin in a pore
of the skin.
Contusion
No break in the skin surface, but there is swelling, discoloration
and pain.

called a bruise).
Eczema

vesicles, pustules, scales, crusts and scabs alone or in
combination.
Erysipelas
Superficial cellulitis with marked lymphatic vessel involvement
caused by group A (or rarely group C or G) haemolytic
streptococci.
Erythema
Redness or inflammation of the skin such as a nervous blush or a
mild sunburn.
Erythrasma
(erythrasma = redness)
A chronic skin infection due to the bacterium corynebacterium
minutissimum.

Erythroderma

Redness of the skin occurring over wide spread areas of the
body.
Furuncles
Boil, skin infection in a gland or hair follicle.
Gangrene
Tissue death due to loss of circulation followed by bacterial
invasion and putrefaction.
Hydradenitis suppurativa
(hydr = relating to water, aden = gland, itis = inflammation of,
suppurativa = formation of pus)
Painful local inflammation of the apocrine glands resulting in
obstruction and rupture of the ducts.
Hirsutism
(hirsute = hairy or rough; ism = condition of)
Excessive hair.
Hyperhydrosis
(hyper = excessive or above; hydr = water, osis = abnormal
condition of)
Excessive sweating.
Impetigo
Contagious, superficial skin infection seen in young children.
Keloid
Abnormally raised or thickened scar that forms after trauma or
surgical incision.
Laceration
Torn, ragged wound.
Lipoma

Soft, movable, subcutaneous nodules with normal overlying
skin.
Melanoma

A highly malignant tumour of melanin-forming cells.
Melanosis

Unusual deposits of black pigment in different parts of the body.
Mole
Pigmented blemish on the skin.

Molluscum contagiosum
A poxvirus infection characterised by skin-coloured, smooth,
waxy, umbilicated papules two to 10 mm in diameter.
Nevus
(nev = birthmark, mole; us = thing)
Birth mark, benign congenital proliferation of blood vessels or
pigmented cells on the skin surface.
Onychia
(onych = fingernail or toenail; ia = condition of)
Inflammation of the nail. Also called onychitis.
Onychitis

Inflammation of the nail.
Onychocryptosis

Scabies
Skin infection caused by the itch mite.
Scleroderma

Hardening of the skin.
Sebaceous cyst
A cyst of sebaceous gland (oil gland) containing yellow fatty
material.
Seborrhoea
(seb/o = sebum or wax; rrhoea = to flow or discharge)
Overproduction of sebum.
Subungual haematoma
(sub = under, ungual = nail, haemat = relating to blood, oma =
tumour, mass)
Collection of blood under the nail.
Urticaria

Localised areas of swelling accompanied by itching associated
with an allergic reaction.
Verrucae
Warts, a papule caused by viral infection.
Vitiligo
Loss of pigment in areas of the skin.
Xeroderma
