Your Gateway To The Universe
Day Tour Activities

Spinning Around
This activity initially discusses the meteorite in the Observatory Museum. It then uses
activities to demonstrate moon phases and why we only see one side of the moon. It
also looks at eclipses and, if time permits, seasons.
Solar Rings
This activity compares the sizes of the main objects in the solar system and the order
of the planets, using mnemonics to help teach this. Other basic aspects of the planets
are discussed during a question and answer time.
Solar Walk
The students will use the walk to show distances between the planets to scale and
compare the size of the planets to a model sun. They will then try to fit carded comments to the appropriate planets with discussion about specific aspects of some planets including the length of their days and their orbits around the sun.
Lowell Telescope
This was the main research telescope at the observatory. It will look at some aspects of
astronomical research and how the telescope works, including comparing it to the type
of telescope Galileo might have used. Activities relating to gravity may also be
included.

Solar Scope
Weather permitting, the students will be able to learn a safe way of observing the sun;
learn about and read the observatory’s sundial; and see real-time images of the sun
projected on to a computer screen.
Astrograph
This activity uses a historical telescope to show the ways that astrophotographs used to
be taken. It looks at the way it was used for asteroid and comet tracking using a blink
comparator with students using their own blink comparator to see how it worked.
Starry Night
This uses an interactive white board to allow the students to learn more about the solar
system and the planets. This activity may be extended depending on how much time is
taken up with the planets to look at other astronomical objects.
Note: If the weather does not allow for outside activities, activities presenting the
similar concepts will take place inside the main building. However, if at all possible,
some activities will take place in the domes so that students. can see the telescopes.
