MISSION STATEMENT GRASS - aims to promote the empowerment of marginalized and underprivileged communities, protect the environment, encourage and educate them to respect tribal/cultural diversity VISION GRASS - envisages a bright future where Liberians are empowered, tribal diversity transcends tribal solidarity, and nature be restored for future generations. BACKGROUND As you may be aware, most of the development, social and human rights issues affecting communities are not sometimes, if not all of the times discussed the by holding of consultations. Therefore, solutions found to address these challenges most of the times do not take into consideration the bottomup approach, thus, have the propensity to undermine the process. On the other hand, it has been noticed that most organizations established to champion the cause of ordinary citizen in the context of working with them to find solutions to these many challenges or to change their condition do not have the capacity to address same. Therefore, the condition of the ordinary citizens either remains the same or even worsens. To engage in after school activities, such as; art, craft, dance, sport music, tutoring, etc for children at risk. It will establish also a “village school” in communities where there are no school In view of the foregoing, like-minded individuals, especially development workers, decided to come together with their expertise and resources to work under the banner of GRASS. The Grassroots Agency for Social Services was established as a non-governmental/ non-partisan and not-for–profit organization. Its activities are based on the holding consultations and collaborating with other development partners and the citizens themselves so as to respond to the many social, development and human rights challenges facing communities in Liberia. In addition, it has national and international board members who are charged with the responsibility to fundraise for the implementation of the activities of GRASS What we do in the communities OBJECTIVES To build the capacity of farmers in food production, processing and marketing as a way of empowering the rural communities economically and protecting the environment; We are presently engaged in conducting • • • • • • Needs assessment Holding of round table discussion/ consultation Research Facilitating workshops/seminars Base line survey Consultancy in community driven development/Decentralization • Community mobilization is being planted in Gardour Town community- Funded by LDLD(Tools support) and the board members 2012 Jan: About 35acres of land was cultivated and cassava is been planted in Timbo Town, Dorwein Clan –Funded by the Board 2012 Mar: 3 additional satellite schools are established in three camps in the Liberian Agriculture Company and a village school is also being established in Whegkpee and Timbo Town respectively, to provide Early Childhood Development for underprivileged and marginalized kids in rural communities especially in area where there are no schools.
