Day 3
What Is the difference between weather and climate?
September 21, 2015
What is Climate?
Yesterday we started off with an inquiry into air pressure but before we
continue we need to take a step back and analyze climate and weather.
Climate: is the average weather pattern of a region over a period of time.
Climate can be described by many factors such as...
*Temperature-precipitation graph
*Winds
*Air Pressure
*Landforms
*Ocean Currents
Many people get climate and weather mixed up but the main difference is
Climate is measured over TIME.

What is Weather?
Well if climate is the average weather of a region over time, then what is
weather? If you have ever said "It's hot outside" or "It's so cloudy." What you
talking about or describing is weather.
Weather: is what it is like outside at any given place and time.
Characteristics of weather are...
*Temperature (How Hot or Cold a place is)
#Measured using a thermometer
*Humidity
*Air Pressure
*Cloud cover
*Wind
*Precipitation (Rain,Sleet,Snow,Hail)

Weather is observable, which means you can see it. Weather is constantly
changing.

So what is the difference between Weather & Climate?
All you need to Remember is climate is the average weather of a region
over TIME. As Weather is what it is like outside at any moment. So even
though some of the characteristics might be the same. Climate is over
TIME and Weather is RIGHT NOW!

What is Air Pressure?
Yesterday we talked about climate and weather, today our focus will be
on Air Pressure.
Air Pressure: The force put on a given area by the weight of the air above
it.
While temperature is measured by a thermometer Air Pressure is measured
using a barometer.
Barometer: Instrument used to measure Air Pressure.
Air Pressure can be described in two ways...
*High Pressure
*Low Pressure

How Can Air Pressure Change?
Just like there are factors that determine weather and climate there are
also factors that can affect air pressure. Those include...
*Volume:
$As Volume decreases Air Pressure Increases and as Volume Increases Air Pressure
Decreases.
*Height Above Earth's Surface:
$Air Pressure is greatest at Sea Level because the air molecules are packed tightly
together. So as you go up in the atmosphere Air Pressure Decreases.
*Temperature:
$When it's HOT air pressure Decreases. (Hot=Decrease)
$When it's COLD air pressure Increases. (Cold=Increase)
*Amount of Water Vapor (Also known as HUMIDITY)

Are There Types of Air Pressure?
Yes, there are actually two types of Air Pressure that you commonly hear
which are.....
*High Pressure
*Low Pressure
September 21, 2015
LOW PRESSURE INFO...
*Low Pressure brings WARM and RAINY skies. As air warms it expands
causing the air molecules to spread out causing air pressure to decrease.
So if the weather is warm, cloudy, and rainy there is a Low Pressure
system in the area.

Day 5
What Is Wind?
September 21, 2015
Review: What is Air Pressure?
Yesterday we talked about Air Pressure.
So what is Air Pressure?
Air Pressure: The force put on a given area by the weight of the air above it.
What type of weather comes with High Pressure?
COOL, FAIR WINDS and CLEAR skies
What type of weather comes with Low Pressure?
Low Pressure brings WARM and RAINY skies
Which way does air pressure travel?
AIR PRESSURE MOVES FROM HIGH TO LOW!....

What is Wind?
Yesterday we talked about air pressure, today our focus will be on Wind.
Wind: Air that moves horizontally.
While air pressure is measured by a barometer Wind is charted using a wind
vane.
Wind Vane: Instrument used to chart wind direction.
September 21, 2015
WIND!
*Wind is CREATED by DIFFERENCES in AIR PRESSURE or air rising
(Low Pressure) and falling (High Pressure). Air that rises is know as an
updraft. Air that is sinking is know as a downdraft.
Updraft: Air that is rising
Dowdraft: Air that is sinking
*This process of unequal heating and cooling of air ofter makes a pattern
of rising air, sinking air, and winds is called a convection cell.
Convection cell: A pattern of rising air,
sinking air, and winds.

What is a Land Breeze & a Sea Breeze?
A prime example of a convection cell would be a Land Breeze and a Sea
Breeze. During the day the sun heats the land, causing the air to rise. As the
air rises the cool air over the ocean moves in to take it's place. This is called
a Sea Breeze. A Land Breeze occurs when the air over land cools and sinks
pushing the warm air over the ocean upwards.
Land Breeze: a breeze that blows from land to sea. LAND
Sea Breeze: a breeze that blows from sea to land. SEA

Do you know Wind Zone the U.S.A is in?
There are Global WIND Zones that cover the entire globe but the U.S.A. is
only affected by one. The UNITED STATES is in zone known as the
PREVAILING WESTERLIES.
