What is the Respiratory
System?
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Its role : is to carry gases between outside air and
your blood.
 When is your respiratory system at work?

While singing, talking, laughing, breathing
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Mucus
 Many parts of the respiratory system are coated
with mucus  a sticky, thick fluid that traps
dust, germs …etc.

AIR PATH
First :
Air enters through the nose or mouth
 Next :
Sinus warm and moisture the air
 Then :
The nose will trap dust and germs. How? By the help of
its hairs and layer of mucus
 After that :
Air passes from sinus  back of the throat

 Finally to the larynx
Larynx contains
the vocal cords
LARYNX
What happens in the Larynx?
Vocal cords stretch across the larynx.
The sound of your voice is the result of your breath
making
the vocal cords vibrate
TRACHEA
Is a tube that carries air from the larynx  lungs
 The trachea leads to TWO branches called
bronchi  which go into the lungsbranch into
smaller tubes called bronchioles.
 Trachea Two branches smaller tubes

Bronchi
Bronchioles
ASTHMA
A disease in which these tubes may become narrowed.
Prevents air from easily traveling through the lungs
ALVEOLI
The bronchioles end in clusters of tiny thin-walled
pouches or air sacs in the lungs
These Air sacs called Alveoli

What happens in the Alveoli or these air sacs ?
It is where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide
leaves the blood through Capillaries
DIAPHRAM
Dome-shaped muscle
forms the bottom of the chest area
 Inhale (Breath In) moves

Exhale (Breath Out) moves
CILIA

Tiny hair liked structures on cells in linings of many
parts of respiratory system
RESPIRATORY & CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS
WORK TOGETHER
These 2 systems work together to get oxygen to
their cells.
The respiratory system gets the oxygen as far as
the tiny air sacs inside your lungs.
Circulatory system:
The blood picks up the oxygen there and carries it
to all your cells-all the way down to your toes.

IN AIR SAC
Two things happen at the same time
1. Oxygen leaves the lungs and enters the blood.
2. Carbon dioxide goes the other way ,It leaves the
blood and enters the lungs.
the output of one system is the input of the other
system.
WHEN YOU HOLD YOUR BREATH !!
When you hold your breath, carbon dioxide builds
up in your blood.
 Your brain can sense this
Without your making a decision, your brain
sends a message to the diaphragm and rib
muscles telling them to breathe
