ADVERTISEMENT PROJECT
**Please make sure that any ad, commercial, etc. you choose is school appropriate. If you are not sure,
ask yourself, “Self, would Mrs. Hendrix approve?”
PART I
As the first part of our advertising study, I would like you to choose two advertisements. One of these
ads should be one that you feel is effective and one that is weak. Take time with this and be sure to choose
representative ads. Cut each ad out of the magazines or newspapers and carefully mount it on paper. On a
separate sheet, analyze its merit on the following basis:
1.
State why you've chosen this ad and if it's effective or not.
2.
Analyze its:
∙
A. colors/layout – how it all ties together, makes the eye travel around the ad, etc. and be
detailed in your description!
∙
B. slogan – if no slogan, explain text.
∙
C. reason for buying the product– what do I get if I buy this product? What idea are
they selling?
3.
State the target audience (to whom the ad is trying to appeal) and analyze the ad’s effectiveness in
this area (did it work?).
4.
Label each ad as to the propaganda techniques (bandwagon, transfer, testimonial-which kind, card
stacking, etc.) used to gain audience attention.
5.
Label each ad as to the persuasive techniques used (refer to your notes!) (Appeals to
credibility/authority, appeals to emotion, appeals to logic).
PART II
Carefully observe one commercial on television, Youtube or listen to one on the radio. You are a critic
analyzing its effectiveness.
6.
State why you've chosen this ad and if it's effective or not.
