The Ambiguous Case - SSA
In geometry you learned that SSA was not a
valid method for proving two triangles
congruent. Do you remember why?

How can you tell if a triangle even exists?
If it exists, how do you know whether it is
ambiguous or not?
Is the triangle obtuse? What does that tell you?
Is the triangle right? What does that tell you?

So we only need to worry about the
ambiguous case if the triangle is acute.
First, check the non-adjacent side. Is there
anything that could help you there?
Then look at the altitude. What can that tell
you? (How would you find it?)

Summary If the angle of the triangle is obtuse or right, just check to make sure
the triangle actually exists by comparing the lengths of the sides (do
every pair of lengths of two sides add up to more than the length of
the third side?).
If the triangle is acute, look at the length of the non-adjacent side.
Is it greater than the length of the adjacent side? Then you have
just one triangle.
If the non-adjacent side is NOT greater than the adjacent length,
then find the altitude. Compare the non-adjacent side - is it long
enough to make a triangle? If so, is it short enough to make two
triangles?

So now you can find out whether or not you have an ambiguous
case. How do you solve a triangle if it is ambiguous?
Actually, first you draw a picture!

Now draw the other picture.
