Astatine isotopes in medicine
211
At is known to accumulate in the thyroid and occasionally is the preferred treatment for
hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer because the particles emitted from 211 At provide more
energy than radiolabeled iodine, the other treatment method (Figure 1). However, astatine has
shown a tendency to induce tumors, so its use is limited [574-576]. The 211 At-labeled dicarborane (cluster of boron, carbon, and hydrogen atoms) ligand known as the Venus Flytrap
Cluster (VFC) is being investigated for use as a robust pharmaceutical in radiotherapy
treatment [574-576].

Glossary
hyperthyroidism – too much thyroid hormone is produced in the body. [return]
ligand – the atoms or groups joined to the central atom [703]. [return]
radiolabeled – a mixture of an isotopically unmodified compound with one or more analogous
radioactive isotopically substituted compound(s). [return]
radiotherapy (radiation therapy) – the treatment of disease by means of radiation from
radioactive substances or X-rays. [return]
X-rays – electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength ranging from 0.01 to 10 nanometers—
shorter than those of UV rays and typically longer than those of gamma rays.
