Abstract
A Swedish SME, intending to submit a Eurostars
proposal, is inviting a European SME as partner
in a project to develop new methods for
detection of cancer/autoimmune diseases. The
company has developed a cost effective method
for measuring abnormal cell division through a
simple blood test, which is used for detection of
tumors. The aim of the project is to integrate this
technology with technology from the partner.
The partner should be an SME developing drugs
for cancer/autoimmune diseases.
Description
One of the most fundamental characteristics of cancer
is uncontrolled cell division in the body. By measuring
the rate of cell division, one can determine the
aggressiveness, spread and growth of the tumor. A
Swedish biotechnology SME has developed a cost
effective method for measuring abnormal cell division
through a simple blood test. This method can be used
for detection and disease investigation, as well as
therapy monitoring. It is a high sensitivity test allowing
the physician to detect ten times smaller growth
activity, widens the applicability to solid tumors and
prognostic use. The test is complementary to
traditional tumor markers.
The aim of the Swedish SME is for the cell division
test to become a standard procedure in cancer
disease investigation and follow-up. To finance the
market application and access, a Eurostars
application is planned for the autumn 2010. A
European SME, active in the area of diagnosis and/or
treatment of cancer and/or autoimmune disease, is
invited to become a project partner. The aim of the
project is to find new methods for detection and
monitoring of autoimmune disease and/or of cancer,
both which causes abnormal cell proliferation. This
should be helpful to tailor treatment strategies to
individual patients. It could also open up new ways for
inexpensive diagnosis. If the research is successful,
the already developed blood test for rate of cell
division can be integrated with the technology
available from the partner.

available from the partner.
