CERTIFICATE IN SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT Course Overview The Certificate in Small Business Management is one of the main courses offered by the MASE Business Training Institute. The course has been tailored to suit the needs of the private sector in particular the Small to Medium Enterprises (SME’s), individuals who would like to start their own businesses and wider business community. The course is now offered for a 2 semester full-time study program equivalent to nine months or four semester part-time study program equivalent to eighteen months. Aims: The aim of the course is to: Effectively train participants to take up employment in local SME’s. Effectively train participants to successfully start and grow their own businesses on a daily basis. Prepare participants to pursue further education in business management and finance. Give an opportunity for participants to obtain in-country qualification Prepare participants to take part in life more effectively and to value their knowledge and skills to apply in their daily living. Objectives: The learning outcomes of the course are to: Ensure participants acquire employmentrelated skills and knowledge and be able to apply to a range of activities relevant to SME’s in Solomon Islands. Ensure participants acquire practical knowledge and skills and be able to apply to successfully start and grow their own businesses both in an urban and rural setting. Enable participants to have better understanding of the dynamic SME’s business operations and environment both locally and internationally. Prepare participants to take on higher and further education in similar or business management related fields. Admission Requirements: Satisfactory completion of form 5, 6 & 7. Satisfactory completion of Form 1, 2 & 3 with at least two years of relevant work experience. Successful completion of a recognized program of study. Course Design and Structure: The Certificate in Small Business Management is a practical oriented course designed particularly to enhance current SME’s management policies and practices in Solomon Islands. The course is aligned with similar internationally recognized and reputable programs such as the International Labour Organization (ILO)/South Pacific Commission (SPC) Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) program and Adelaide TAFE Institute of Small Business Management program. Participants will be attached with several SME’s in Honiara throughout the duration of the course to gain practical experience in SME’s daily business operations and management. The participants will also develop a business idea of their own, conduct a research, write a viable business plan for possible funding from commercial banks and start the business. The business idea does not have to be a million dollar concept. The principle is to start small and grow your business. In the first Semester participants enroll in five compulsory units, that is, five units for each of the two Semesters. Overall the course comprises of 10 units taken over two semesters of full-time study. The units may also be done through part-time study mode, and in which case it will take longer to complete the course. NOTE: It is important to note that some units have a PREREQUISITE requirement and students MUST pass the prerequisite to continue to the next unit in the course.
