Spring 2017 4th QUARTER SCIENCE PROJECT This is an “assessment,” which means it counts the same as a “quiz” in your science grade Science projects are DUE FRIDAY, APRIL 21st, 2017 (the week after Spring Break)! Purpose: To gain an understanding of the various cell structures and their corresponding functions within the cell. This project also allows the students to express their understanding of the material in a unique and creative manner that uses their visual, artistic, and spatial intelligences. Assignment: Your final project will include both an animal and a plant cell (one represented by your cell model and the other by your analogy). All sections will be neatly attached to a cardboard poster board that will be provided in class. You will have class time to work on this project, but you will need to bring objects from home as well. ALL arranged neatly on the poster board Include the following things in your final project: 1) cell model (3D objects) representing a plant or animal cell 2) cell model key—describing the cell model objects 3) cell analogy drawing—based on a theme (must be the other type of cell that your model is not) 4) cell analogy summary—describing the analogy drawing 5) colored, labeled, hand drawings of both plant and animal cells 6) reflection (completed in class on the due date) 1) cell model Create a 3-dimensional model of the cell using recycled/used objects to represent each organelle—ATTACHED TO A CARDBOARD POSTER BOARD. The objects you choose need not have the same shape as the actual organelles found within the cell, but they MUST have the same/similar type of function. For example, one may use a battery to represent the mitochondrion—the powerhouse of the cell. You may choose either a plant or an animal cell for the model, but you must include the appropriate cell organelles for whichever cell type you choose. Attach the objects to a cardboard poster board—be creative here! Try to not have too much tape/glue visible, use color, and label the organelle each object represents. (OFF LIMITS: nucleus = remote control; mitochondrion = battery; ER = straw) 2) cell model key In addition to your model, you must include a description of each object and organelle in your model. Be sure to clearly describe each organelle function and the function of the objects you used to represent them. Use the table that will be handed out in class for this…neatly fill in the table and cut it out to paste onto the poster board. 1 of 4 3) cell analogy drawing Create a cell analogy (based on a theme) for either a plant or an animal cell (whichever one your model is not). Draw the “cell” on 8.5” x 14” computer paper (provided in class) and clearly label each of the required organelles (you can use a legend for this) and the corresponding objects/people/places that you have chosen to represent them in your analogy. Identify the type of cell and the theme (ex. “animal cell = Churchill Middle School”). USE COLOR! (OFF LIMITS: human body, traditional school, city) 4) cell analogy summary You must include all corresponding cell organelles for the chosen cell type and clearly describe how your analogy has the same/similar functions as each of the organelles. Use the table that will be handed out in class for this…neatly fill in the table and cut it out to paste onto the poster board. (OFF LIMITS: human body, traditional school, city) 5) colored, labeled, HAND drawings of a plant AND an animal cell Use a 8½” x 11” white computer paper for each drawing. You can trace computergenerated cells, but the drawings submitted for this project need to be drawn by your hand! For each drawing, identify the type of cell and include color and labels for the organelles. You only need to label the required organelles for this project. 6) Reflection—This will be the last section you will do for this project, since you are reflecting on your completed work. You will answers these questions on a handout that will be given in class on the due date. 1. Step-by-step process of how you completed the assignment (what you did first, next, etc.) 2. Obstacles you encountered in completing your project 3. What you liked best about your project 4. Things you would change about your completed project Cell organelles you must include: -cell membrane -nucleus -vacuoles -chloroplasts (plant cells) 2 of 4 -mitochondria -endoplasmic reticulum -cell wall (plant cells) -lysosomes (animal cells) Timeline: (1) Parent and student signature on this handout............................... DUE Wed, Mar 29th (2) Quarter Project Summary (on additional handout) ................... DUE Fri, Mar 31st • List the objects you are using for your cell model—just state the objects and the organelles they represent. Identify if it is a plant or animal cell • Identify your cell analogy (cell = ?) and whether it is a plant or animal cell. List the organelles and their corresponding analogies. • Colored, labeled, hand drawing of a plant or animal cell. Do not staple this to your summary—you will be turning it in with your final project! Write your name and period on the back. (3) Final Project ................................................................................ DUE Fri, Apr 21st This is an “assessment,” which means it counts the same as a “quiz” in your science grade Grading: (1) Parent and student signature on this handout (Due Wed, 3/29) .............. Required (2) Quarter Project Summary (Due Fri, 3/31) .............................................. 10 points (3) Final project (Due Fri, 4/21) ................................................................... 50 points Take this paper home and read with your parent/guardian. After you show the signed copy to your teacher, you will keep this safely in your binder to use as a reference and for a binder check. I have read and understand the requirements of this 4th Quarter Science Project. _____________________________________ Print Parent Name _____________________________________ Print Student Name _____________________________________ Parent Signature _____________________________________ Student Signature ** See the other side of this paper for the rubric ** You should check the requirements before each deadline! 3 of 4 4th Quarter Science Project Rubric- CELL MODEL Name _____________________________________________ Period ______ Points Received Points Possible 1) Quarter Project Summary (DUE Fri, 3/31) ________ 10 pts 2) Final cell model project (DUE Fri, 4/21) ________ 50 pts a) CELL MODEL & KEY (22 points) -Does the cell model reflect obvious effort? -Do the chosen materials mimic the function of each of the following organelles? cell membrane ________/ 2 pts vacuole ________/ 2 pts ________/ 3 pts nucleus ________/ 2 pts mitochondria ________/ 2 pts endoplasmic reticulum ________ / 2 pts cell wall & chloroplasts (plant) OR lysosomes (animal)________/ 2 pts -Does the model include the appropriate organelles for the chosen cell type? ________/ 1 pt -Does the key clearly describe the function of each organelle and object? ________/ 6 pts b) ANALOGY & SUMMARY (18 points) -Does the cell analogy drawing reflect obvious effort? -Does the summary clearly describe the function of each of the following organelles and their analogies? cell membrane ________/ 2 pts vacuole ________/ 2 pts nucleus ________/ 5 pts ________/ 2 pts mitochondria ________/ 2 pts endoplasmic reticulum ________ / 2 pts cell wall & chloroplasts (plant) OR lysosomes (animal)________/ 2 pts -Does the analogy include the appropriate organelles for the chosen cell type? ________/ 1 pt c) DRAWINGS (6 points) -Does the project include colored, labeled, hand drawings of both a plant and an animal cell? ________/ 6 pts d) REFLECTION (4 points) -Does the reflection include a step-by-step process, obstacles, liked best, things would change ________/ 4 pts TOTAL ________ / 50 points 4 of 4
