4th QUARTER SCIENCE PROJECT
This is an “assessment,” which means it counts the same as a “quiz” in your science grade
Science projects are DUE FRIDAY, APRIL 21st, 2017 (the week after Spring Break)!
Purpose:
To gain an understanding of the various cell structures and their corresponding functions
within the cell. This project also allows the students to express their understanding of the
material in a unique and creative manner that uses their visual, artistic, and spatial
intelligences.
Assignment: Your final project will include both an animal and a plant cell (one represented by your
cell model and the other by your analogy). All sections will be neatly attached to a
cardboard poster board that will be provided in class. You will have class time to
work on this project, but you will need to bring objects from home as well.

Include the following things in your final project:
1)
cell model (3D objects) representing a plant or animal cell
2)
cell model key—describing the cell model objects
3)
cell analogy drawing—based on a theme (must be the other type of cell
that your model is not)
4)
cell analogy summary—describing the analogy drawing
5)
colored, labeled, hand drawings of both plant and animal cells
6)
reflection (completed in class on the due date)
1) cell model
Create a 3-dimensional model of the cell using recycled/used objects to represent each
organelle—ATTACHED TO A CARDBOARD POSTER BOARD. The objects you
choose need not have the same shape as the actual organelles found within the cell, but
they MUST have the same/similar type of function. For example, one may use a battery
to represent the mitochondrion—the powerhouse of the cell. You may choose either a
plant or an animal cell for the model, but you must include the appropriate cell organelles
for whichever cell type you choose.
Attach the objects to a cardboard poster board—be creative here! Try to not have too
much tape/glue visible, use color, and label the organelle each object represents.

2) cell model key
In addition to your model, you must include a description of each object and organelle in
your model. Be sure to clearly describe each organelle function and the function of the
objects you used to represent them. Use the table that will be handed out in class for
this…neatly fill in the table and cut it out to paste onto the poster board.

3) cell analogy drawing
Create a cell analogy (based on a theme) for either a plant or an animal cell (whichever
one your model is not). Draw the “cell” on 8.5” x 14” computer paper (provided in class)
and clearly label each of the required organelles (you can use a legend for this) and the
corresponding objects/people/places that you have chosen to represent them in your
analogy. Identify the type of cell and the theme (ex. “animal cell = Churchill Middle
School”). USE COLOR!

4) cell analogy summary
You must include all corresponding cell organelles for the chosen cell type and clearly
describe how your analogy has the same/similar functions as each of the organelles. Use
the table that will be handed out in class for this…neatly fill in the table and cut it out to
paste onto the poster board.

5) colored, labeled, HAND drawings of a plant AND an animal cell
Use a 8½” x 11” white computer paper for each drawing. You can trace computergenerated cells, but the drawings submitted for this project need to be drawn by your
hand! For each drawing, identify the type of cell and include color and labels for the
organelles. You only need to label the required organelles for this project.
6) Reflection—This will be the last section you will do for this project, since you are reflecting
on your completed work. You will answers these questions on a handout that will be
given in class on the due date.

the organelles they represent. Identify if it is a plant or animal cell

• Colored, labeled, hand drawing of a plant or animal cell.
Do not staple this to your summary—you will be turning it in with your
final project! Write your name and period on the back.
