Rosa Scott Accelerated English I Summer Reading
All Accelerated English I students must read BOTH of the following novels and complete one assignment
for each novel. These assignments will be collected at the beginning of your first Accelerated English I class
on either August 6th or August 7th. Accelerated English I teachers will schedule activities and reading
comprehension tests for the books during the first two weeks of school. Be prepared.
Accelerated English I: The Chosen by Chaim Potok AND Lord of the Flies by William Golding In addition to the Accelerated English I summer reading requirements, accelerated students are also
responsible for reading ONE of the following. All together, ACCELERATED STUDENTS WILL READ
THREE (3) SUMMER READING NOVELS.
Trash by Andy Mulligan OR Drivers Ed by Caroline Cooney -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------After reading The Chosen by Chaim Potok, students will complete one of the following items:
ART
-Design a book cover that depicts a particular scene of importance. This scene must illustrate one of
the main themes of the novel. Explain the importance of the scene, which theme it illustrates, and
why you chose that particular scene in a well-written paragraph. Be sure to have your artwork and
paragraph on your first day of class. Your illustration should be full color and 8 ½” x 11”. Your
paragraph should be typed.
OR
WRITING
-Think about a character from the novel to which you best relate. Write a five-paragraph essay that
explains why you feel you relate to this character most. Remember to include an introduction, three
body paragraphs of evidence and support, and one short conclusion. Your essay should be typed and
ready to turn in at the beginning of your first day of English class.
------------------------------------------------------AND----------------------------------------------------------After reading Lord of the Flies by William Golding, students will complete one of the following items:
ART
-Choose a character from the novel and create a mask that represents either his shame and selfconsciousness or his freedom and liberation from it. If you choose Jack, do not simply recreate the
mask that he makes for himself in the novel. Be sure your mask is original and illustrates real
insight. Your mask should be about 8 ½” x 11” and in full color. Type a well-written paragraph that
explains the choices you made in designing your character’s mask.
OR
WRITING
-Imagine you are one of the characters trapped on the deserted island with the other boys. Write
seven journal entries about the events in which you participate or witness while on the island. Your
journal entries should focus on important events and should be consistent in their point of view. Your
journal entries should be typed and ready to turn in at the beginning of your first English class.

All students MUST read one of the following books:
• Trash by Andy Mulligan • Drivers Ed by Caroline Cooney Students need to read ONE of the above books and be prepared for a basic reading comprehension quiz, as
well as a thorough writing assessment during the first week of school.
ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL students are asked to bring the following:
Students who choose Trash by Andy Mulligan will complete one of the following items:
ART
-Design a book cover that depicts a particular scene of importance. Explain the importance of the
scene and why you chose it in a well-written paragraph.
OR
WRITING
-Compare your life at home to the lives of Raphael, Gardo, or Junjun. How does your life in Madison
County differ from life in the Philippines? Use specific examples from your own experiences, and
compare them to examples discussed in the book. Be specific in your explanations.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Students who choose Drivers Ed by Caroline Cooney will complete one of the following items:
ART
-Design a “sign” that characters Remy or Morgan might create to warn kids of the dangers of
vandalism. Explain your sign in a well-written paragraph.
OR
WRITING
-Students are to compare and contrast the reactions of Remy’s parents and Morgan’s parents when
they found out that their children stole the STOP sign. How would your own parents react to you
being in a similar situation? Be specific about their reactions. Include siblings and other family
members and how the consequences would impact them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*ART projects must be completed on 8 1/2 x 11 unlined paper. They will be graded on originality,
creativity, neatness, and the ability to illustrate a specific scene of the novel.
*WRITING projects must be approximately 3 to 5 well-written paragraphs. Writing projects need to be
typed, double spaced, and printed.
