WELFARE SOCIOLOGY ABOUT THE PROGRAMME The study programme is designed to prepare sociologists – workers able to investigate and analyse public phenomenon and processes, to reveal social problems and to foresee ways of resolution, to prepare and implement social programmes and projects. The applicant must have a Bachelor’s Degree in the Humanities or social sciences or a uniform university study diploma and meet entrance requirements for the university. Students, who do not have the fundamentals of Sociology, must take an additional 4 courses outlined in the study programme, which they must pass during the first 2 semesters: Introduction to Sociology Methods of Social Research Theories of Sociology Statistical Methods in Sociology Aside from the main programme, it is possible to select specialization in Sociology of Economics. Students take 12 courses including the following: Quanitative and Qualitative Methodology of Sociological Research Sociology of Economic Life Social Policy Models of the Welfare State Social Demographics Institutional System of Social Well-Being Comparative EU Social Policy Analysis Life Course Sociology Equal Opportunity and the Economics of Cohesion Systemic Evaluation of Social Programmes, etc. Students in the specialization study: Strategy of Economic Development of the State Marketing Research Business Economics Employment and the Labour Market, etc. The study programme concludes with a Master’s Thesis. Graduates are awarded a Master’s Degree in Sociology. There is an internship practice planned. Having completed the Welfare Sociology programme or the Sociology of Economics specialization, studies can be continued in doctoral programmes of Sociology or other social science areas. ABOUT THE QUALIFICATION The Sociology Master’s Degree is necessary wanting to work as a sociologist. An individual, who has acquired a Master’s Degree in Sociology, should: be able to analyse and explain social processes forming contemporary Lithuanian and other countries’ societal core, analyse the causes and outcomes of problems, critically apply sociological theoretical perspectives and concepts, evaluate public life phenomenon and contemporary social policy, systematically examine and summarize statistical information, creatively apply scientific and sociological work skills, use quanitative and qualitative methods investigating processes ongoing in society, in organizations, work collectives and various groups of individuals, be able to plan and prepare applications and implement various social projects and programmes, know how to collect, process and interpret information about public opinion and conduct various polls, know sociological theoretical concepts, contemporary quantitative and qualitative social research methods, know about statistical information gathering, processing and analysis methods using modern information technology, know how to work responsibly, thoroughly, independently and quickly, to organize one’s work and effectively collaborate with colleagues and clients. The Master’s Degree in Sociology can be acquired at universities offering studies, according to a Sociology study programme. Those seeking a Sociology Master’s Degree need to have a Bachelor’s Degree in the Humanities or the social sciences or a univeristy diploma. Non-formal or informal ways of having acquired skills to work as a sociologist aren’t recognized. Having acquired the Sociology Master’s Degree individuals can work in public opinion and market research companies, in government administrative institutions, in private firms, in social service offices, in the media and in non-governmental organizations.
