I love to listen to music!
The BIG Idea—
Energy is the ability to do work or make something
happen.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It only
changes form.
Here is my Energy Quest example. Enjoy!
What kind of energy does it have?
Where does the energy come from?
Where does the energy go?
Types of Energy
Potential (Stored)
Gravitational (Position)
Chemical (Molecular Bonds)
Elastic (Stretchiness)
Spring (Coiled/Compression)
Nuclear (Bonds of Atomic Particles)
Electrical (Static/Charge build up)
Kinetic (Moving)
Thermal (Heat)
Light
Sound
Electric Current
Mechanical
What energy conversions are present in listening to music?
Energy Conversion [A]:
The ipod has chemical potential energy. The chemical energy converts to electrical
energy because pressing the power button closes a circuit and electrons begin to
move through the ipod to turn it on.
Energy Conversion [B]:
The headphone has sound energy. The electrical energy converts to sound energy
because the electricity sends the digital information of a song up the wire to the
headphone piece, which causes the air to vibrate.
Energy Conversion [C]:
The ipod has light energy. The electrical energy converts to light energy because
it lights up the display screen on the ipod.
What type of heat transfer is occurring?
The BIG Idea— Temperature is a measure of the kinetic energy or the
molecular movement of a substance. Every energy conversion
involves some conversion of energy to heat. Heat energy likes to
spread out and be uniform.
Here is my example of where heat can come from and how it moves.
Heat Transfer Example [D]: In my example, heat energy comes from
the kinetic energy of electricity, which is electrons moving through wires.
The heat energy transfers into the metal of the ipod and then into my hand as I
touch it by conduction.
