M E LLEN EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT What’s your official position? the money, they work here for the love of film. It’s one of the happiest times of my life. Good question. Sometimes I’m Girl Friday sometimes I’m Executive Assistant. I try to help everyone as much as possible. My hope is that as SLFS continues to expand and experience new growth, all involved will remember the roots of the Broadway and Tower theaters. What are your hopes for SLFS? How long have you worked here? My hope is that as SLFS continues to expand and experience new growth, all involved will remember the roots of the Broadway and Tower theaters. A lot of sacrifice, both financial and emotional, has been made by real film lovers who work here and have worked here. I hope that will never be forgotten. Seven wild years. What is your favorite movie and why? This, of course is the most difficult question of all. I have favorites in various categories. My favorite genre is Horror - Psychological Terror movies in particular. I’ve outgrown slashers. The “History of Violence” poster hangs in my office one of my all-time favorites. What drew you to start working for Salt Lake Film Society? I started as a volunteer; worked my way up to box office, then to concessions (I was proud to be a “popcorn person”), and then upstairs to administration. Have you always loved film? When I was 8, living in Pittsburgh, PA, my mother would drop me off every Saturday at a beautiful old theater located on a cobblestone road and I would stay all day watching a double feature, (at least two times - same movies), and cliffhanger shorts (Flash Gordon). I remember it cost 25 cents. I never got tired of going. Our family would go to drive-in theaters, and my dad would make us leave early to avoid the car rush. We would turn around and try to watch the end of the movie through the back window or our car without a speaker. I never miss the ending or beginning of any show now that I am all grown up! And yes, I will always love film. Barbara Mellen and her sister a book reviewer for a large newspaper, and an editor for the University Weekly newspaper. Writing is my favorite pastime and I intend to pursue screenwriting this summer. What is your favorite aspect of working here? The volunteers, patrons, and employees are so interesting. They are intelligent and have a tremendous knowledge of film. I really miss Andik working at the front counter. I always told him he should have a web site called “Ask Andy”. He taught me so much. At SLFS I am treated respectfully, have a lot of freedom, and can see all the movies I want for free!! It doesn’t get any better than that. The caliber of employees at the SLFS is beyond anything you could imagine. They don’t work here for What are some of your favorite experiences with film? I read voraciously - all kinds of books; swim; and I am a writer. I used to have a weekly newspaper column of my own, was My proudest accomplishment in life is my five children and twelve grandchildren. They live in various parts of the country - NYC, Chicago, Flagstaff, Portage, MI, and one here in SLC. My children all love film and my son Vance is a filmmaker. I got to play the part of an insane nurse in his graduation film (Screechers) when he got his Masters in film from the Chicago Art Institute. One of his professors asked who I was and said I was terrifying; hearing that was one of my proudest moments. My family is filled with artists (including my husband who died in 1998). My children are so proud that I work for Salt Lake Film Society. I’m proud to work here too. It’s the best job I’ve ever had. SHOP AT The film festival in Edinburgh, Scotland where my brother, sister, and I stayed for ten days. There was a horror film festival (some of the most frightening movies I’ve ever seen), stand-up comedy, dance, music, and film from all over the world. We watched “Blue Velvet” on TV, while resting, then decided to go see “Blue Velvet” as a live play, and as we got in a cab after the play the driver turned around and - I swear to you this is true” his name tag said “DAVID LYNCH.” It was truly one of the best times of my life. For my decade birthday, my brother and sister took me to Telluride Film Festival, bought me the $700 pass and we ran from movie to movie for four days. There was never time to eat so we lived mostly on hot dogs which none of us usually eat. We had a phenomenal condo right downtown by all the theaters. My son photoshopped a picture of my sister and me driving home from Telluride. That was a fine time. What are some of your hobbies? Is there anything else you would like us to know about you? SLFS SHOWS OFF BEAUTIFUL NEW BROADWAY SPACE BY HOSTING TWO PANELS TO KICK OFF ART HOUSE CONVERGENCE 2015. The Art House Convergence conference is an annual conference where delegates enjoy inspirational speakers, informative sessions, and panel discussions that provide productive tips about programming, marketing, fundraising, technology, and industry trends to help improve the quality and effectiveness of community-based, mission-driven art house cinemas around the United States and beyond. These independent Art House cinemas rely on local communities for support, both from box office and concession revenue and, to truly thrive, grow and serve, from philanthropic gifts and volunteer support. Independent art house operators gather annually in Midway, Utah, for a four-day discussion of common challenges, successes, and secrets at the Convergence, just before the start of the Sundance Film Festival. This year for the first time, conference participants were invited to kick off the Convergence with two panel discussions and a film screening at the Broadway Centre Cinemas in Salt Lake City before heading up the mountain for the remainder of the confab. SLFS delegates were Tori Baker, executive director, Amy Beth Leber, director of operations, and Barb Guy, director of public relations, along with several SLFS board members. Convergence participants milled around before the first panel, ooh-ing and aah-ing over the new lobby. Convergence participants gather outside the Zermatt Resort in Midway, Utah. Tori Baker of SLFS leads a second panel, this one on collaborations between SLFS and community partners. From left, Josh Elstein, Salt Lake Community College Center for Arts and Media; Tori Baker; Bill Allred, SLFS Advisory Board Member and X96 Radio From Hell celebrity; Don Hamp, Founder and CEO, Merco Local; Liz Galloway, Director of Marketing, Merco Local; and Susan Vogel, Founder, Artes de Mexico en Utah.
