Suffixes Cheat Sheet
2 types of suffixes:
• Consonant-letter suffixes:
o Have no change in the base word.
o The exception to this is basewords that end in “y”.
! When a suffix begins with “i” (-ing, -ish), keep the base
word’s “y”.
Example: Fly + -ing = Flying
! When a word ends in a vowel + y (monkey), keep the
base word’s “y” when adding –s to make a plural.
Example: Monkey + -s = Monkeys
• Vowel-letter suffixes:
o Almost always means you have to make a change in the
base word.
! Run + -ing = Running (double n)
! Love + -able = Lovable (remove the e)
! Ruby + -s = Rubies
