55 Standard form standard (adjective) STAN durd Other Word Forms: standards (plural noun), standardized (adjective) Main Idea: Something that is standard is well known and widely used. Example: The standard measure of weight used in the U.S. is the pound. Math Usage: The standard form of a linear equation is , Ax + B y = C
where A, B, and C are real numbers, and A and B are not both zero. Opposites: different, irregular Essential Understanding One form of a linear equation, called Standard form, allows you to find intercepts quickly. You can use intercepts to draw the graph. Find the x and y intercepts of the graph of each equation. A.) x − 2y = 2
B.) 3x − 5y =− 20
C.) − 5x + 3y =− 7.5 Draw a line with the given intercepts D.) x − intercept: − 1 y − intercept: − 4 Graph each equation using x and y intercepts E.) x + y = 4
F.) x − y =− 8
G.) − 4x + y =− 12
If A = 0 in the standard form Ax + B y = C , then you can write the equation in the form y = b , Where b is a constant. If B = 0 , you can write the equation in the form x = a , where a is a constant. The graph of y = b is a horizontal line, and the graph of x = a is a vertical line. For each equation, tell whether its graph is a Horizontal or a vertical line and graph each equation. H.) y =− 4 I.) y = 74
J.) x =− 3
Write each equation in standard form using integers. K.) y = 2x + 5
L.) y − 4 =− 2 (x − 3) M.) y =− 23 x − 1
