Chapter 6: Solving Linear Equations and their Graphs
Algebra Essential Understanding: Mathematics is used to model real world
situations.
Essential Question: How can we use linear models to represent real world
situations and to make predictions?
How can we model and evaluate real world situations using functions and function
notation?
Section 4: Standard Form
Lesson Objective: To graph equations using intercepts and writes equations in
standard form
Activity: Intercepts
1) Make a table of values for the equation 3y – 2x = 12.
2) Use the table of values to graph 3y – 2x = 12
3) What is the y-intercept?
4) What is the value of x when the line crosses the x-axis?
5) In the equation 3y – 2x = 12, what is the values of y when x = 0? What is the
value of x when y = 0?
6) Using your answers to 3, 4, and 5, explain how you can make a graph of 3y
– 2x = 12 without making a table.

Finding x & y intercepts
1) Find the x & y intercepts of 4x – 9y = - 12
2) Find the x & y intercepts of 5x + 2y = 20
3) Find the x & y intercepts of -3x – 6y = - 24
Graphing Lines Using Intercepts
1) Graph 5x + 2y = - 10
2) Graph 6x + 3y = 18
Graphing Horizontal & Vertical Lines
1) y = - 3
2) x = 2
3) y = 5
4) y = 0
5) x = -4
6) x = 0
Transforming to Standard Form

Real World Example
1) Write an equation in standard form to find the minutes someone who
weights 150lb would need to bicycle and swim laps in order to burn 300
calories. Use the data below.
2) Write an equation in standard form to find the minutes someone who weighs
150 lb would need to bowl and walk to burn 250 calories.
