Mountains and Volcanoes Mountains and volcanoes form as tectonic plates move. Key Concepts SECTION 1 Movement of rock builds mountains. Learn how different types of mountains form. SECTION 2 Volcanoes form as molten rock erupts. Learn why there are different types of volcanoes and volcanic eruptions. SECTION 3 Volcanoes affect Earth’s land, air, and water. Learn how volcanic eruptions affect land, air, and water. Prepare and practice for the FCAT • Section Reviews, pp. 792, 801, 810 • Chapter Review, pp. 812–814 • FCAT Practice, p. 815 CLASSZONE.COM • Florida Review: Content Review and FCAT Practice 782 Unit 5: The Changing Earth How does new land form from molten rock? Making Mountains Line up and hold a row of about ten checkers or coins on a table. Tilt the row, then let it go. Observe and Think What happened to the height, length, and shape of the row? How do you think these changes might be similar to the processes by which some mountains and valleys form? Under Pressure Half fill two empty plastic bottles with a fresh carbonated beverage. Screw the caps on the bottles tightly. Put one bottle in hot tap water and one in ice water. Wait three minutes. Observe and Think Slowly unscrew the caps from the bottles and observe how quickly gas bubbles form and escape. What is the role of pressure? How might gas bubbles cause pressure to build up in magma as they form? Internet Activity: Volcanoes Go to ClassZone.com to make a volcano erupt. FLORIDA REVIEW CLASSZONE.COM Content Review and FCAT Practice TAKING NOTES CONTENT FRAME Organize your notes into a content frame for mountains. Make categories at the top that describe their types, features, and how they form. Then fill in the boxes for each type of mountain. Later in the chapter you will make content frames for other topics. TYPE OF WHERE THEY MOUNTAINS CHARACTERISTIC FORM EXAMPLES at convergent Appalachians rocks bent and folded plate boundaries Himalayas folded fault-block VOCABULARY STRATEGY Draw a word triangle diagram for each new vocabulary term. On the bottom line, write and define the term. Above that, write a sentence that uses the term correctly. At the top, draw a small picture to show what the term looks like. 784 Unit 5: The Changing Earth Fault-block mountains form as continental crust is pulled apart. fault-block mountain: a mountain pushed up or tilted along a fault
