Murcia:
Murcia is a Spanish city, capital of the
municipality and the province of the same
name and of the autonomous community of
Murcia. It is the center of the natural region
of the Huerta de Murcia and its
metropolitan area. It is located in the
southeast of the Iberian Peninsula on the
River Segura. With 442,203 inhabitants (INE
2011) Murcia occupies the 7th place in the
list of municipalities in Spain by
population.

PREHISTORY:
Prehistory:
•Prehistory is the period before
the beginning of history, ranging
from the appearance of human
beings until the invention of writing.
Prehistory is divided into three
stages: Palaeolithic, Neolithic and
the Metal Ages.
•Preserving important prehistoric
sites, as the oldest human remains
of the peninsula in the Sima de las
Palomas, the presence of Culture
Argar in Cabezo Gordo (Torre
Pacheco), The Crows (Cieza), The
Incarnation (Caravaca) and Coimbra
Barranco Ancho (Jumilla).
The Stone age.
There are some deposits of

The stone age: Is the period
roughly between 2,500,000 and
3,000 years. C., The Stone Age is
divided into: Paleolithic or Old Age,

approximately 10,000 years and
5,000 BC.

•The Metal Ages:
Is the period of
Prehistory from about
the fourth and first
millennium BC in Spain.
The Metal Age is
divided into three
stages: Copper Age
(third millennium BC)
Bronze Age
(II millennium BC) and
Iron Age (first
millennium BC).

-In Roman Empire, Cartagena was
one of the most important cities.
-The
Roman Murcia began with the
conquest by Scipio, of Carthago Nova
in 209 BC.
-The Romanization of the current
Murcia was a process that began
after the Second Punic War.
 Deposits :the mining town of Agudo
(Cartagena), the mining areas of Coto
Fortuna (Mazarron) or The Blessed
(Cartagena).
They are a perfect example of
conservation of archaeological
remains built in different times
in the same environment.
MORE DEPOSITS:
Fortuna firstly was a
municipality in which
there was a spring of
thermal waters that
gave life to one of the
finest resorts in Spain.
Its springs were known
and used since ancient
times.

*In 1243, the emir of the Taifa of Murcia
(Hud Ibn al-Dawla) signed the capitulation
of Alcaraz with Fernando III, accepting a
protectorate of the kingdoms of Castile and
Leon. Thus Murcia earned a strong alliance
to repel the Aragonese (James I) and
Granada (Ibn al-Ahmar).
* Lorca Castle, seat of the Spanish
mount,
was besieging during the
Mudejar revolution.
*However, several nucleus of the former
Taifa don’t accepted the treaty, such as
Orihuela (which complied shortly after),
Mula, Cartagena and Lorca.

XVI CENTURY IN MURCIA:
-Renaissance:
In the sixteenth century, the city of Murcia was the most
populous kingdom with about ten thousand inhabitants, followed
by Lorca.
-Modern Ages:
The weakness of the monarchy, at the end of the Middle Ages,
affected to the region with multiple incidents and factions facing
the various noble families and urban patriarchy.

population growth and Murcia
experienced an expansion of silk.
»The sixteenth century dawns
with a large population and
economic growth, which in the
Huerta de Murcia will be driven by
the development of silk. From the
late fifteenth century the garden
had been populated by mulberry
trees.
