New Standards • SC.7.L.16.1 • SC.7.L.16.2 Old Standards •SC.F.2.3.2 Gene = A set of instructions for an inherited trait Allele = One of the alternate forms of a gene Phenotype = An organism’s physical appearance Genotype =The entire genetic make up of an organism Homozygous = Two Dominant or Two recessive alleles Heterozygous = One dominant and one recessive allele together Dominant = trait that’s observed most often Recessive = The trait that is observed least often Punnett Square = a tool used to organize all the possible combinations of offspring from particular parents Incomplete Dominants = a trait where one allele is not completely dominant over the other, but each has influence on the trait DISCLOSURE FROM WEBSITE: Activities, lessons, & worksheets available on any page of this web site are intended for use by a single teacher in his/her classroom or to share at educational conferences. Activity Sheets located on sciencespot.net Genetics with Sponge Bob (pdf) Genetics with SpongeBob 2 (pdf) SpongeBob Genetics Quiz (pdf) Genetics with SpongeBob ‐ Incomplete Dominance (pdf) Genetics with SpongeBob ‐ Dihybrid (pdf) SpongeBob Activities are used to make sure that the students understand the specific vocabulary. Homozygous – Two Capital (BB) or Two lowercase (bb) alleles. Heterozygous‐ One Capital and One Lowercase (Bb) alleles. I also use these worksheets to make sure the students understand Genotype is the letter alleles that represent a trait ( example BB, Bb, or bb) Phenotype is the physical appearance of a trait ( examples blue eyes, round body, etc.) By using SpongeBob my students get a greater understanding because it is fun for them. SpongeBob Activities are also used to teach the students how to complete a Punnett Square. Students are given a scenario: Would SpongeBob Squarepants and SpongeSusie roundpants children have roundpants or squarepants if SpongeBob is heterozygous fro squarepants and SpongeSusie is homozygous recessive? S s s s Ss ss Ss ss Alien Genetics After We have complete all of the SpongeBob Activities and I am sure that the students have a good understanding of Phenotypes, Genotypes, Dominant, Recessive, etc. I allow the student to create their own Alien Babies. They are given a list of criteria and a sheet that tells them that the parents are Heterozygous for all of the traits and they have to flip a coin to figure out each of the babies alleles one from each parent for each trait that is given. After completing the coin flipping for the different traits the students are allowed to create their alien baby out of construction paper and we display them around the classroom. Students can get as creative as they want as long as they have all of the components needed to create the baby from the genotypes and phenotypes that they flipped the coin for. Example worksheets and pictures of created Aliens follow.
