Speckle tracking echocardiography makes it feasible to assess global and
regional myocardial function. Recent studies support the role of speckle tracking
echocardiography in analysis of left ventricular dyssynchrony, prediction the outcome
of myocardial infarction and heart failure. However, acquisition and analysis of
myocardial strain with 2D speckle tracking is relative time consuming and it may
limit its clinical application.
With the rapid advance in the field of 3D echocardiography and technology of
data processing, it is possible to analysis myocardial strain bases on 3D image. The
preliminary studies showed acceptable accuracy compared with strain from 2D
speckle tracking or MRI tagging. It also has been shown to be an acceptable method
to assess left ventricular volume and mass. Our preliminary experiences of 3D speckle
tracking in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy will be presented. Recent
progress of this new modality of echocardiography will be updated.
