Describes a noun eg: large, red box, angry dog.
Modifies a verb eg: ran swiftly, slept peacefully.
Same consonant sound repeated at the beginning of words,
silent sea.
Reference to something outside the text - usually to another
work of literature.
Having more than one possible meaning.
Opposite in meaning. “heavy” is an antonym of “light”.
The placing of two contrasting or opposing ideas for effect.
“Their intentions were admirable, their achievements negligible.”

The actual spoken words, quotes. Within quotation marks.
Creates an emotional response in the audience.
Using a pleasant often woolly substitute for a blunt direct
expression. “A clean bomb”. “Passed away”.
Creates excitement.
Using figures of speech. Metaphor, simile, personification etc.
Creates a tone of formality.
Exaggeration for effect. “He’s as old as the hills.”
“Plenty of it.”
A verb that commands. “Come here.” “Go away.” “Buy now.”
The meaning is contrary to the actual words. “Not a bad effort”
when someone has an excellent result.
Language of a particular activity, profession, sport, trade etc.
Juxtaposition
The technique of placing close together or side by side ideas or
objects to emphasise and compare some particular aspect of
them.
Metaphor
One thing is described in terms of another.
Noun
Concrete nouns are objects or things, abstract nouns are
concepts and feelings.
Sound of word suggests sense. “Hush! Whisper. Ping-Pong”
An apparent contradiction “Honest thief.” “Sweet sorrow.”
A seeming absurdity. “Death, thou shalt die.”
An inanimate object or idea is given human reference.
Takes the place of a noun. “I, you, we, them, it.”

A play on words that sound the same but have different
meanings.
Reported speech Not the actual words. “She said that she would be late.”

A statement put as a question.

An object that represents something else. Scales for justice, a
dove for peace.
Has a similar meaning “Slim, thin, slender”.
A movement or action “walk, run, skip”. Verbs are often used as
a metaphor.
