CARESTREAM OnSight 3D Extremity System
What is the CARESTREAM System?
A CT scan for arms and legs
Allows for weight bearing examination
Installed at preferred location
History
1967 - Sir Godfrey Hounsfield invented the first commercially viable CT
scanner.
1971 - First Brain Scan done
1980 - Notable improvements
2008 - New generation of scanners
CT Scans Today
High radiation dose, up to 10 mSv
Lengthy process
Non-weight bearing
Machinery typically in specialized centers
Benefits of a CT Scan
Excellent cross sectional images not found on plain X-Rays
Easier to distinguish tissues in different physical densities
More detail in bony structures
Generally $600-200 less than MRI’s per scan
5 minute scan time
Downsides of CT
Less soft tissue detail
Risk of irradiation
Exposure to radiation
Conventional CT vs CARESTEAM CT
Smaller ecological footprint saving time and cost of installation
Able to perform weight bearing scans
Easy access door for step-in access to patients
Reduced radiation dosage compared to regular CT
Installation at prefered locations for convenient imaging
Importance of Weight Bearing Imaging
X-rays / CT scans do not adequately
capture the frontal plane
Allows evaluation of deformities that
involve external rotation, or
rotation of metatarsals
“The image on the left from
a non-weight-bearing exam
fails to provide a clear view
of bone impingement
revealed in the OnSight
weight-bearing exam on the
“CubeVue, the pedCAT weight
bearing CT imaging system’s
custom visualization software,
allows physicians to create
oblique and frontal-plane images
of varying angles and thicknesses
from the weight bearing CT data.”
The Future
Lower radiation dosage
Lower cost for general public
Wider access
