FACTS
DID YOU KNOW?
The enamel on our teeth is the
hardest substance in our body
The first tooth usually appears at the
age of 6-9 months
It allows food enter the body
mouth
They chew food into small pieces
teeth
tongue
salivary glands
oesophagus
stomach
It moves the broken down food
around, mixes it with saliva and
it
sends
this
down
the
oesophagus
They produce saliva to make
food softer and smoother and
easy to swallow
It transports food from
mouth to the stomach
the
It breaks down food furthermore
into smaller pieces and mixes it
with stomach juices (acids and
enzymes)
Large salivary glands produce around
1- 1.5 litres saliva every day!
It is sometimes called “gullet”
It is about 25 cm long
It is “J” shaped
It can hold 2-3 litres of food
liver
gall bladder
pancreas
small intestine
large intestine
rectum
anus
It produces bile which neutralizes
stomach acids in the intestine.
It also clears the blood of waste
products
It is the second largest organ in our
body after the skin
It weights about 1.4 kg in a 70kg man
It stores the bile produced by
the liver
The food doesn’t pass through it. It
only produces chemicals needed for
digestion
Sometimes you can have stones in
the gall bladder
It produces enzymes which help
break down starch, proteins and
fats.
It also produces insulin, an
hormone which help to control
the sugar level in the blood
It produces 1.5 litres of pancreatic
juices very day
Diabetes occurs when pancreas doesn’t
produce enough insulin, and so there
is too much glucose in the blood
It absorbs nutrients from the
digested food and releases them
into the blood through its walls
It consists of three parts
It is about 7 m long. It can also work
even when 1/3 of it is removed.
It removes excess water and
slats from the waste material
and makes faeces
It is made up of 7 parts!
It is 1.5 m long
It stores the faeces before they
leave the body
It is the last part of the large intestine
When the rectum is full, you need to
run to the toilet!
It allows faeces to leave the
body when relaxing
When you relax the rind of muscles
around the anus, faeces comes out
Faeces contains wastes, such as fibres,
bacteria and dead cells
