Effects of Human Activity on Natural Change
Grade Eleven
Life Science Standard
Benchmark F:
Grade Level Indicator
Explain how human choices
today will affect the quality
and quantity of life on earth.
Give examples of how
human activity can
accelerate rates of natural
change and can have
unforeseen consequences.
Teacher Information:
The structure of a forest can change based upon natural and human events.
Fires are a natural component of a forest’s life. These fires can allow for forest
regeneration. This regeneration can affect producers and consumers as the
biodiversity changes and shifts in a region where fires have occurred.
Materials needed for each group or student:

Task Card 2
Task Card 1: Anticipation Guide
Anticipation Guide:
Before viewing the Bio Bit, read each statement and decide whether you agree
or disagree. Mark your understanding with an “x” in the box.
After viewing the Bio Bit, record your answers based on information learned from
the video clip.
Bio Bit: Effect of Human Activity on Natural Change
Before Viewing
Agree Disagree
Statement
Climate change will result in a 20%
increase in fire frequency.
Fire can reset a forest to a younger age.
After a forest fire, the biodiversity will
remain the same.
Fire does not change the structure of a
forest.
After Viewing
Agree Disagree
Task Card Two: 4 Point Response
A student is studying a local freshwater ecosystem containing a lake, river, and
tributary for a class project. This ecosystem has producers, first-level consumers,
second-level consumers, and third-level consumers. A chemical enters the
ecosystem and kills all of the first level consumers.
Give one example of how human activity created the chemical spill. Next
identify three possible consequences of the chemical entering the freshwater
ecosystem.

O Points
Clearly interprets and synthesizes the content. Accurately
determines one human activity that could have caused the
chemical spill in a freshwater ecosystem. Identifies 3
different consequences of the chemical spill.
Good quality response and effort. May lack some details or
fails to address all 4 of the points in their response.
Content reflects a beginning or minimal level of
understanding. Only 2 of the 4 parts to the question have
been answered correctly.
Lacks content understanding. Little or no effort evident.
Only 1 of the 4 parts to the question have been answered
correctly.
No response or work completed.
