The Broadway Musical
“Welcome to the 60s” as the big musical about
big dreams HAIRSPRAY bursts into town this summer, brought
to you by the team who created our award-winning Cabaret,
Les Misérables and Mamma Mia! You can’t stop the beat in this
big and bold musical about one girl’s inspiring dream to dance
and the chances she takes to make it happen. HAIRSPRAY,
winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, is a
family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with dancing,
singing and characters who speak their mind. Through witty
and sometimes breathtaking storytelling, HAIRSPRAY! illustrates
how change comes about when we stand up for what we
believe in. HAIRSPRAY! is recommended for age 8 and above.

A revised version of Snoopy! The Musical
Based on the comic strip “PEANUTS” by Charles M. Schulz
We are proud to present this newly revised musical
featuring Charles Schulz’s iconic “Peanuts” characters.
Under the guidance of that consummate showman Snoopy, they sing and
dance their way through witty philosophies about love and life as only
The Peanuts gang can. In addition to a beloved score, this revusical
introduces a new song for Sally with music by award-winning composer
Larry Grossman (Minnie’s Boys) and lyrics by award-winning composer/lyricist
Andrew Lippa (You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown Broadway Revival).
With fresh orchestrations and a revised script, audiences can expect
The Peanuts characters to dance into their hearts more endearingly than ever
before! A heartwarming musical about the joys of growing up, this 80-minute
musical with one intermission is recommended for audiences age 4 and up.

How far will you go to get what you want?
Laura Eason’s steamy and smart SEX WITH STRANGERS is one
of the most popular plays in America right now. Exploring the
contextual divide between age and gender, this conflict between
“analog v. digital” also finds the commonalities that spark serious
attraction. When 20-something star sex blogger and memoirist
Ethan tracks down his idol, the gifted but obscure (and 40-ish)
novelist Olivia, he finds they each crave what the other possesses.
As attraction between opposites turns into a relationship, and they
inch closer to getting what they want, both must confront the dark
side of ambition and the difficulty of reinventing oneself when the
past is only a click away. SEX WITH STRANGERS is recommended
for audiences over 14 years of age.
July 6 through August 12

Directed by Christy Montour-Larson

MAD!
GO
This year, Aspen Theatre Festival offers a musical mash up from
the minds behind MAD Magazine and Second City: THE MAD
SHOW! Primetime Emmy nominee and Peabody winner Rich Talarico
(Comedy Central’s Key & Peele) turns his creativity as a writer for
MAD TV to the musical stage. A Second City company member,
Rich has written for Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show with
Jay Leno and more. He will team up with top flight comic and
musical talent to create a one-of-a-kind event, right here in Aspen!
Casting is underway – don’t be surprised if some of your favorite
comedy stars are part of this exciting new project!
DON’T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO DISCOVER
THE NEXT BIG ‘THING!’
For this unique show, we will be seeking private audiences, who will become a
very important part of the process by viewing components of the show as they are
developed. Sketches, songs, improv situations – all these and more will be presented
at various locations from September 8 – 16. Email [email protected] to get
on a list of potential private audience members! More info to come!
The Aspen Theatre Festival (ATF) features over two weeks of activity, fostering new
work by emerging and established creative teams. Theatre Aspen’s commitment to
new work began in 2012 with commissions and workshops that include the work of
artists such as Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater (Spring Awakening), Burt Bacharach,
Lear deBessonet, Joe Iconis, Sandy Rustin and more. ATF puts Theatre Aspen on the
national map, having developed or produced at least two shows that were recently
developed in New York and on a path to commercial production.
“The time we had at Theatre Aspen allowed us to finish a draft of Finn
the Fearless... Theatre Aspen’s incredible staff, facilities, resources and
community helped us to accomplish in a linchpin two weeks, a feat that
we’ve been working toward for years. The focused time Theatre Aspen
provides not only lets us make a better show, it provides the intentional
working environment that makes us better artists. Theatre Aspen has
no doubt set a bar against which we’ll measure future development of
our work, both in terms of what an institution brings to the table, and in
what it inspires us to bring.”
—composer Andrew Butler, Finn the Fearless, 1st Annual ATF
ATF will take place September 8-16 at various
locations, including the historic Wheeler Opera House.
Major support for the ASPEN THEATRE FESTIVAL provided
by Barbara and Franklin Carson.

Theatre Aspen School (TAS) offers pre-professional and professional
training for ages 4-18, as well as adults, in a variety of disciplines
including acting, dance, voice, and improvisation. The TAS 2017
summer includes 15 programs ranging from 1 to 4 weeks.
Our teaching artists provide a nurturing, positive and safe learning environment
so that each participant can discover her or his unique voice while having fun,
exploring the creative process within a community of their peers.
Theatre Aspen School also specializes in providing performance opportunities so
that students will get to put their skills to use (both on and off stage) in a fullyproduced, professionally-supported setting. Summer students in grades 3-6 and
7-12, respectively, will perform in our Musical Theatre Workshop production of
Alice in Wonderland (July 27-29) and our Conservatory production of the Monty
Python-infused Spamalot (August 4 & 6).
Once more, Theatre Aspen is pleased to offer the popular BROADWAY
DREAMS week-long intensive for aspiring performers ages 8 and up. Led by an
exceptional faculty of high-profile Broadway actors, directors, choreographers
and agents committed to giving back to the theatrical community, this camp
acquaints students with professionals and is one of our biggest draws.
