SWEDISH ICE REPORT
BAY OF BOTHNIA
In the archipelagos up to 80 cm fast ice. At sea off the fast ice edge in the
western and northern parts, a 15 nautical miles wide area with alternating 10
– 30 cm level ice. Nygrån – Bjuröklubb, new ice or open water.
In central Bay of Bothnia, north of the latitude through Bjuröklubb, mostly 3070 cm very close drift ice with heavy rides and cracks. Ridges, difficult to
pass, around Raahe and Nahkiainen.
South of the Bjuröklubb latitude, the drift ice is 30-60 cm thick with ridges
and cracks. Off the Swedish coast mostly thin level ice and very open ice
with single heavy floes.
THE QUARK
In the Vaasa archipelago and northwest of Holmöarna 20 - 50 cm fast ice.
Northeast of Nordvalen and on the eastern side of Holmöarna and northwards, a 5-10 Nautical Miles wide lead with very open drift ice, new ice or
open water. Further east, up to 50 cm close or very close ice with ridges.
At Nordvalen and westwards mainly open water or very open drift ice with
15-30 cm floes.
Southeast of Nordvalen close and very close drift ice up to 45 cm thick.
SEA OF BOTHNIA
In the archipelagos 25-50 cm fast ice. At sea in central and northeastern
parts, mostly 15-45 cm very close drift ice with numerous cracks, ridges and
heavy floes. In the central part west of longitude 19 degrees east, 10-20 cm
close drift ice.
South of latitude 62 degrees north and east of longitude 20 degrees east,
there is an area with open water or new ice, but close to the Finnish coast a
belt with 10-20 cm close or very close drift ice with some leads.
North of 62 degrees 40 minutes north and west of longitude 20 degrees east,
open water or very open driftice. From Åstholmsudde southwards to Bight of
Gävle, a lead with open water 15-25 Nautical Miles wide. Approximately 10
Nautical Miles east of Hornslandet, a small area with ridged very close drift
ice.
In Bight of Gävle, from Agö via Eggegrund to Örskär is a brash ice barrier.
At sea in southernmost Sea of Bothnia open water.
ÅNGERMANÄLVEN
20-40 cm fast ice.
SEA OF ÅLAND AND ARCHIPELAGO SEA
Open water or very open drift ice at Sea of Åland. Inside Svartklubben and in
the Archipelago Sea 10-35 cm fast ice or thin level ice.
BALTIC SEA
In archipelagos southwards to Karlskrona 10 - 35 cm fast ice or partly broken
ice.
LAKE MÄLAREN
Fast ice, in western part 20-35 cm, in eastern part 10-25 cm.

GULF OF FINLAND
Fast ice 20-40 cm in the Finnish archipelagoes. Fast ice 30-60 cm to St Petersburg and Viborg. From the Vyborg Bay approach to Kotlin, a lead with
thin level ice or open water. South from this, to Vigrund and around the islands to Hogland, very close drift ice, 20-45 cm with some ridges.
I Narva Bay mostly open water, but along the coast from Narva to Tallinn
very close ice or level ice, 15-35 cm. North of this some open drift ice.
The lead, with mainly open water, continues from Vyborg Bay approach
along the Finnish coast westwards to Archipelago Sea.
GULF OF RIGA
In the Moon Strait, around the islands and in the entrance to Pärnu, 20-35
cm fast or level ice.
At sea in the western part 10-25 cm close or very close drift ice. In the eastern and northern part mostly open water.In the Irben Strait 5-20 cm open or
close drift ice.
LAKE VÄNERN
In Vänersborgsviken, Kinneviken, in Mariestadsfjärden and the entrance to
Karlstad and Kristinehamn 10-30 cm fast ice. In Dalbosjön 15-25 cm close or
very close ice with ridges and some heavy floes.
In western Värmlandssjön 10-20 cm rafted close drift ice with some ridges.
There is a narrow lead along Värmlandsnäs.
Else at sea thin open drift ice or open water.
