Pax Romana The Early Roman Empire This is a time for “Roman Peace” that lasts for nearly 200 years after Augustus creates the empire. PAX ROMANA Julio Claudian Emperors These men were all leaders of Rome and part Tiberius 14-37 AD Prior to Augustus’ death, he had trained a cousin to take his place. He was a great military leader who stabilized the economy and regulated business to help prevent fraud. Caligula 37-41 AD • Increased court system’s power. • Abolished sales tax. • Allowed people in exile to return to Rome. • Suffered from a mental illness that caused him to act strangely and cruelly. • Appointed his horse consul of Rome. • Wasted a lot of money. • Ordered others to be killed. • Praetorian guard killed him and appointed another as emperor. Claudius 41-54 AD • Appointed by Praetorian guard. • Conquered most of Britain. • Built a new aqueduct for Rome. • Built a new harbor for Rome. Nero 54-68 AD • Very cruel man. • Had his mother and sisters murdered. • Constructed new buildings • Gave slaves right to file complaints. • “fiddled while Rome burned” is more than likely NOT true. • Did everything he could to help Rome after the great fire. • Committed suicide. What do you see? After Nero died, Rome went through a period of disorder until Vespasian, one of Nero’s proconsuls and a general, took the throne. •Put down rebellions in the empire. •Defeated the Jews and destroyed the Jewish Temple. •Began construction of the Colosseum. •His sons, Titus and Dominitian, ruled after his death. Tragedies struck during their reign. First, Mt. Vesuvius destroyed the city of Pompeii. Second, a great fire badly damaged Rome. 20,000 people escaped, but thousands died in the tragedy. The town was buried in volcanic ash and was not discovered until the 1500’s. The Good Emperors This series of rulers were neither related to Augustus or Vespasian Under these emperors, Rome flourished. Agriculture boomed, trade increased dramatically, and the standard of living became better. Even though these emperors overshadowed the Senate like no others did, they did not abuse their power and devoted their life to making Rome better. Nerv a Trajan Hadrian Antonius Pius Marcus Aurelius
