Abstract
Diocletian divided the Roman Empire into Eastern (also known as the Byzantine Empire) and
Western regions in the late third century A. D. As the Western Roman Empire weakened by the
attack of Germanic Tribes, the Eastern Roman Empire prospered.
In A.D. 330, Emperor
Constantine established a new capital city for the Eastern Roman Empire; the city was called
Constantinople that was built on the Greek city of Byzantium. The new capital became a fortress
city capable of resisting attack from invaders coming through land or sea. Constantinople
became the center of the new Byzantine Empire. The Byzantines expanded its territory by reconquering former Roman territories under the reign of Justinian I 527 A.D. This was the period
of extensive imperial conquest where the Byzantine forces retook North Africa, Sicily, Southern
Spain . . .
Brief History of the Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire is the longest running empire in the history of man kind that ruled for
over a thousand years. The term Byzantine Empire was conventionally used during the 19th
century depicting the Greek – speaking Roman Empire during the middle ages. Byzantine
Empire derived from the original Greek name of Constantinople, Byzantium. Laws governing
the Roman Empire continued in the Byzantine Empire under Justinian and Theodora’s Reign.
Legally, the people participated in the government through the Church. From the time of
Marcianus’ Reign, Byzantine Emperors were crowned by the Patriarchs of Constantinople.
There is no specific date starting the Byzantine Period, but there are a number of events that
might have started the Byzantine Period.
The Reign of Diocletian (284-305), introduced
administrative reforms and divided the empire into Pars Orientis and Pars Occidentis (the
Eastern provinces and Western Regions). Theodosius’ Reign from 379 to 395 brought about the
