Born May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia
Was a ROMANTIC ERA composer
Started piano lessons at age 5
His parents decided he should study law, so he graduated from
Law School and became a government clerk
He hated his job, so he left to study music and composition at the
St. Petersburg Conservatory
He titled his first Symphony Winter Dreams – he struggled with its
composition so much he needed a vacation after its completion.
Winter Dreams’ premier was conducted by his friend Nicholas
Rubenstein
His first masterwork was an orchestral piece titled Romeo and
Juliet – he rewrote it twice and it became one of his most famous
works
Madame Nadezhda von Meck sponsored his composition for 13
years – he wrote some of his finest pieces including the opera
Eugene Onegin and the ballet Swan Lake
Composed March Slav, which contains several Serbian melodies,
when Russia entered war with Turkey in 1876
In 1891 he traveled to the United States for the first time – he
conducted his 1812 Overture for the dedication of Carnegie Hall
Composed the famous Christmas ballet The Nutcracker during his
final years of composition
Died November 6, 1893 from the effects of cholera
