Transcript
The University Eye Center proudly announces the establishment of a specialty clinic for patients with
Hereditary Retinal and Optic Nerve Disease. This clinic will be devoted exclusively to the care of
patients with known or suspected hereditary and developmental diseases of the retina and optic
nerve.
The clinic will be attended by Sherry J. Bass, OD, FAAO and Jerome Sherman, OD, FAAO, who
are both Distinguished Teaching Professors and members of the clinical faculty at the SUNY State
College of Optometry for over 30 years. Drs. Bass and Sherman have years of experience in the
care of patients with hereditary retinal and optic nerve disease and have achieved national and
international recognition for their publications and lectures.
Patients referred to this clinic will be examined with the most current state-of-the-art technology in
imaging, perimetry and electrodiagnostic testing to diagnose the myriad hereditary retinal and optic
nerve diseases that can affect central vision, peripheral vision and/or color vision. Arrangements can
also be made for molecular genetic testing to better define the nature of the hereditary retinal disease
in patients who express an interest. The clinic will also be involved in research projects that will
increase the understanding of the pathophysiology and progression of many of these diseases.
Some hereditary eye diseases or symptoms include, but are not limited to:
Retinitis pigmentosa
Leber congenital amaurosis
Stargardt disease and other macular dystrophies
Cone dystrophy and Cone-rod dystrophy
Achromatopsia (rod monochromatism)
X-linked juvenile retinoschisis
Choroideremia
Ocular albinism
Flecked retinal syndromes
Leber hereditary optic neuropathy
Congenital optic atrophy
Developmental abnormalities of the optic nerve head
Any young patient with unexplainable vision loss
Patients may be referred by calling 1-888-327-5533 to arrange for an appointment and specifying the
Hereditary Retinal and Optic Nerve Disease Clinic. Doctors who refer patients will receive a
comprehensive report with copies of all testing results. Questions may be directed to:
