The stream is determined by the faculty you’re in and is not a reflection of
your French abilities. The French immersion stream is offered in the faculties
of Arts, Social Sciences and Health Sciences and in the Telfer School of
Management. The extended French stream is offered in the faculties of
Science and Engineering.
In both streams, you must complete 14 courses (42 credits) taught in
French. Note that the requirements for the two streams are a little different.

Science help centres offer students support with
first-year physics, chemistry and math courses.
Services include review sessions, diagnostic tests
and one-on-one consultations—in either language.
Most first-year courses also have weekly discussion
groups to review the material. Students in science
and engineering programs say that in fact it’s the
science that’s difficult, not the French!
Other resources
• Conversation workshops for developing your
speaking skills
• A writing help centre to fine tune your French texts
• French courses in writing, speaking, listening
and reading
• Student mentors to guide you, help choose
courses, find resources…and more

Qualitative grades are available to students in
French immersion (not available in extended French).
French immersion students can choose to receive
a pass/fail grade (i.e., Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory)
instead of a numerical grade for their courses taught
in French. These grades won’t count in your academic
average, giving you extra confidence to take a
course in French.

IS MY FRENCH GOOD ENOUGH?
IS IT ALL WORTH IT?
Fadi: Without a doubt, French immersion is
one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I met
many of my friends in French immersion,
and the journey so far has been nothing
short of amazing. Alors, fais-le!
Kate: My French has improved exponentially
after three years at uOttawa and my career
prospects are broader. I’m more disciplined and
French has opened up so many new experiences and new friendships.
Valerie: Absolutely! It’s a source of pride for
me. I’ve met so many friends over the years
who’ve told me how much they regret not
continuing French.
(IN SOME
COURSES)
ARE THE FRENCH PROFESSORS TOUGHER ON THE
ENGLISH STUDENTS?
Valerie: I find that many of these professors are
impressed by a student’s dedication to learning in a
second (or third) language. That being said, they don’t
give preferential treatment and have the same high
standards for every student.
Amelie: I never experienced any different treatment
from the professors. Everyone at the University has been
very supportive, and so many have helped me improve
my French.
Brenda: Personally, I think it’s easier! Studying in French
motivates me to keep up with the material, making it easier
for me to study for finals.
Fadi: French classes are just as much work. I struggled
with French terminology in some classes, but I also had
no idea what an “agrarian socialist” or “populist” was when I
encountered these terms in my English politics class.

WRITE EXAMS AND ASSIGNMENTS IN FRENCH OR IN ENGLISH!
Fadi: I found the placement test bothersome at first. But
I was thankful for it later because I was suggested a French
level where I was comfortable.
Priyanka: I thought it would be difficult because I
hadn’t taken any science courses in French in high
school. However, I didn’t have any trouble.

Maeghan: I was worried about the level of my French too!
But the Immersion Admission Test makes it possible to
determine the courses that best suited my abilities, which
gave me peace of mind when I started university.

Amelie: I find doing the readings for my classes takes
much longer, but having the option to write my essays
and exams in English really helps.
WILL MY GRADES DROP?
Brenda: Surprisingly, my marks were either the same
or better in my French courses.
Valerie: I’ve found that it’s not the language I’m learning
that affects my grades, but rather whether the subject
matter is interesting or the teacher is engaging.
