Digestion 2
The Fab Food Company makes a sandwich called a ‘Healthy
Delight’. It contains bread, butter, celery and ham.
1 Write down the main food
substance contained in:
a bread
b butter
c ham.
2 Do you think the ‘Healthy
Delight’ is healthy?
Explain your reasoning.

A
d
Fats, oils and sweets – you
should only have these as an
occasional treat.
Dairy products
(things made
from milk)
contain fats and
proteins.
Meat, fish, beans, eggs
and nuts contain lots
of protein.
Fruits and vegetables
contain lots of
minerals, vitamins
and fibre.
3 ‘Stringy’ vegetables, like celery,
contain a lot of fibre. Fibre is
not digested by the body.
Write down, in order, the
names of the organs that
the fibre passes through
when it is eaten.
Bread, cereal, rice and pasta
contain lots of starch.
4 The table shows the names of
some enzymes, what they do
and where they are found. Amylase from the
salivary gland is destroyed in the stomach
and so another amylase is added in the small
intestine.
Enzyme
a Where are ‘salivary glands’ found?
b Where do you think most digestion
happens? Explain your reasoning using the
table above.

c Copy the table below. Put ticks in the boxes to show which part of the ‘Healthy Delight’
sandwich will be digested in the various parts of the digestive system. There can be more than
one tick for each food.

d What do digestive enzymes split starch into?
e What pH do you think pepsin works best at? Explain your answer.
f What temperature do you think lipase works best at? Explain your answer.
I CAN...
• describe what happens in the stomach and small intestine
• describe what conditions enzymes work best in • explain what digestion is.
