Mission & Impact
Statements
Mission
BIOS's mission is to seek and share fundamental knowledge of the oceans through state-of-the-art scientific
research, world-class field expeditions and comprehensive educational experiences.
Background
Founded in 1903, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) is one of the world’s oldest centers for
ocean research. The result of a joint venture by Harvard University, New York University, and the Bermuda
Natural History Society, BIOS is an independent US not-for-profit organization operating in Bermuda.
Impact
BIOS believes in conducting ocean science research for human good, and its researchers are committed to
using their science to benefit people and communities around the world, providing resources and knowledge
that can be used by government representatives, environmental management officials, community leaders, and
individual citizens to make the planet a better place to live.
The research conducted at BIOS is relevant to the waters surrounding Bermuda, as well as global Earth system,
and is multidisciplinary, spanning the biological, chemical, geological, and physical sciences. BIOS researchers
are active partners in regional and international research collaborations that are working to address some of the
most pressing issues of our time including climate change, marine conservation, ecosystem health, and naturaldisaster risk assessment.
Needs
From hands-on programs for Bermudian primary and secondary students to semester long courses for visiting
college students, BIOS conducts a variety of education programs each year that better prepare the next
generation for the scientific and technical challenges of the future, and that requires private support. BIOS’s
yearlong Ocean Academy provides educational resources to local teachers and offers hands-on learning
experiences to hundreds of students each year. BIOS also provides unique opportunities for undergraduate and
graduate college students, including summer and fall courses, internships, and authentic research experiences
in BIOS’s laboratories and aboard its research vessels.
