Excerpt of the Voting Rights Act (1965)
In the wake of the tragic events of Freedom Summer, Congress signed the Voting Rights
Act into law on August 6, 1965.
AN ACT To enforce the fifteenth amendment to the Constitution of the United
States, and for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in
Congress assembled, That this Act shall be known as the "Voting Rights Act of 1965."
SEC. 2. No voting qualification or prerequisite to voting, or standard, practice, or procedure
shall be imposed or applied by any State or political subdivision to deny or abridge the right of
any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color.
