Train the Trainer: Learning Disabilities course
Open/Tailored course
Course Overview
Developed and piloted in 2010, this course is aimed at people who provide support to women
with mild to moderate learning disabilities and those specially trained to give a health or
education message to this target group. The course is interactive and includes a number of
activities and resources, specifically tailored for this target group. Trainees on the course could
include community nurses, screening staff, support workers and community champions.
Courses are held in-house or at external locations. If external locations are required for a
tailored course (commissioned), the cost of this is attributed to the external co-ordinator.
Trainees on courses follow the registration process, which involves sending back an application
form and refundable cheque or invoice, before they are confirmed on the course. Prospective
trainees must also show they will be able to send back monitoring information over the course of
3 months.
Objectives for trainees include

Identify what and where the breasts are and their functions
Discuss attitudes and perceptions of breasts
 Understand what breast awareness is and its importance
 Discuss normal and life-cycle changes of the breast
 Explain what to do if someone finds an unusual change
 Understand the importance of early diagnosis
 Explain the NHS breast screening programme and processes
 Identify who is eligible for breast screening
 Identify the 3 main risks of breast cancer (Breast Cancer Care) - Optional
 Explore the range of ways to communicate the breast awareness message to individuals
and groups with LD
 Share best practice in working with this group

BHP Managers/Training and Support Officers
BHP Managers and Officers have extensive knowledge and experience in developing and
delivering training and working with the communities of our target groups. All BHP
Officers/Managers have either a medical or health promotion academic background and have
significant knowledge on health inequalities. Training lasting longer than half a day is always
facilitated by two members of staff.
Cost of course
This course is £60 per person if open (organised by Breast Cancer Care and delivered at a
Breast Cancer Care regional Office).
This course is £120 per person if tailored (commissioned).
Cost of course includes travel and accommodation (if applicable) of trainer(s).
