Dictation Report
Write each numbered term as you hear it, spelling each term correctly. This exercise will help you
learn to hear, comprehend, visualize, and spell the new medical terms accurately.
A 76-year-old female patient visited the (1) ____________________________ for the first
time. She had been experiencing a variety of problems associated with blood disease, so her primary care physician referred her to this specialist. She had already been on many different (2)
____________________________ to help her fight (3) ____________________________. But so far,
the physicians had not been able to determine the cause of her problems and were calling her disease
process (4) ____________________________.
She has a history of a number of blood (5) ____________________________ and is currently
suffering from (6) ____________________________ in her feet and hands. She has lost two toes to
(7) ____________________________ and is hopeful that this doctor will be able to help. There is
a history of (8) ____________________________ in her family. Her problems do not seem to be
those of (9) ____________________________. The doctor is concerned that she might have a(n)
(10) ____________________________ caused by her own immune response attacking her otherwise
healthy tissues. She does have a history of many (11) ____________________________, but has never
had an episode of (12) ____________________________.
The doctor performs a number of blood tests to rule out certain diseases. Her test results
do not indicate any (13) ____________________________, or a reduced number of platelets;
no (14) ____________________________, or presence of red blood cells of unequal size; no
(15) ____________________________, or abnormal increase in the number of red blood cells; and no
(16) ____________________________, or irregularly shaped red blood cells. This is all good news.

However, on physical exam, the physician determines that the patient’s
(17) ____________________________ is enlarged, a condition known as (18) ____________________________.
If her spleen is injured or infected, she might require a(n) (19) ____________________________, or
removal of the spleen. Her (20) ____________________________ and (21) ____________________________
are within normal limits. She does not have (22) ____________________________. It is unlikely
she has contracted a disease like (23) ____________________________, as there is no history of
a puncture injury. The doctor will consider the possibility that she has an infection, such as a(n)
(24) ____________________________ or a(n) (25) ____________________________, which is resistant
to (26) ____________________________ therapy.
The specialist will consider many possible causes of her problems before he prescribes
any medication or treatment. It is imperative that he work quickly, however, as this patient
could quickly develop (27) ____________________________, a systemwide disease caused
by the presence of bacteria and their toxins in the circulating blood. He will have to run more
(28) ____________________________ and (29) ____________________________ tests on her. He
will check her clotting time or her (30) ____________________________ to determine if she is likely
to (31) ____________________________. This will be important to know if she should need a(n)
(32) ____________________________.

Case Study
Fill in the blank with the correct medical term from this chapter.
Tyrone is a 17-year-old high school student who goes to his doctor because of increasing fatigue,
sore throat, elevated temperature, and swollen lymph nodes. His doctor performs a test called a
monospot to check for a disease that is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus and is communicable.
This disease is called mononucleosis. The test is positive, and he is given this diagnosis. Associated
with this disease there is frequently inflammation of the pharynx, enlargement of the spleen, and
decreased white blood cell count.
What is the appropriate medical terminology for:
1.inflammation of the pharynx _________________________
2.enlargement of the spleen ____________________________
3.decreased white blood cell count ______________________
4.elevated temperature ________________________________

Consider the following excerpt from a clinician’s notes following completion of a hematologic and
lymphatic examination. For the highlighted terms or word parts, provide the meaning.
Patient was referred by primary physician for evaluation of prolonged lymphadenitis

the torso. Although enlargement and tenderness of the lymph nodes was noted on exam,
no evidence of lymphoma (B) ____________________________ was noted. Hematology

blood count is suggestive of bacterial infection, and antibiotic (D) ____________________________
therapy has been prescribed. Failure of the patient to respond to previous antibiotic therapy suggests an antibiotic-resistant organism or immunodeficiency (E) ____________________________.

Blood and the Lymphatic System
Worksheet 2 Answers
Dictation Report
Write each numbered term as you hear it, spelling each term correctly. This exercise will help you
learn to hear, comprehend, visualize, and spell the new medical terms accurately.
A 76-year-old female patient visited the (1) hematologist for the first time. She had been experiencing a variety of problems associated with blood disease, so her primary care physician referred
her to this specialist. She had already been on many different (2) antibiotics to help her fight (3)
infection. But so far, the physicians had not been able to determine the cause of her problems and
were calling her disease process (4) idiopathic disease.
She has a history of a number of blood (5) dyscrasias and is currently suffering from (6) edema
in her feet and hands. She has lost two toes to (7) gas gangrene and is hopeful that this doctor will be
able to help. There is a history of (8) Hodgkin’s disease in her family. Her problems do not seem to
be those of (9) communicable disease. The doctor is concerned that she might have an (10) autoimmune disease, caused by her own immune response attacking her otherwise healthy tissues. She does
have a history of many (11) allergies, but has never had an episode of (12) anaphylaxis.
The doctor performs a number of blood tests to rule out certain diseases. Her test results do not
indicate any (13) thrombopenia, or a reduced number of platelets; no (14) anisocytosis, or presence
of red blood cells of unequal size; no (15) polycythemia, or abnormal increase in the number of red
blood cells; and no (16) poikilocytosis, or irregularly shaped red blood cells. This is all good news.
However, on physical exam, the physician determines that the patient’s (17) spleen is enlarged,
a condition known as (18) splenomegaly. If her spleen is injured or infected, she might require a
(19) splenectomy, or removal of the spleen. Her (20) hemoglobin and (21) hematocrit are within normal limits. She does not have (22) anemia. It is unlikely she has contracted a disease like (23) tetanus,
as there is no history of a puncture injury. The doctor will consider the possibility that she has an

infection, such as a (24) staphylococcemia or a (25) streptococcemia, that is resistant to (26) antibiotic therapy.
The specialist will consider many possible causes of her problems before he prescribes any
medication or treatment. It is imperative that he work quickly, however, as this patient could quickly
develop (27) septicemia, a systemwide disease caused by the presence of bacteria and their toxins in
the circulating blood. He will have to run more (28) blood chemistry and (29) blood culture tests on
her. He will check her clotting time or her (30) coagulation time to determine if she is likely to (31)
hemorrhage. This will be important to know if she should need a (32) blood transfusion.
