PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Enduring Understandings
• Plants, green algae, and some bacteria convert light energy to chemical
energy in the chemical reactions of photosynthesis.
• Plants need light energy, the green pigment chlorophyll, carbon dioxide
and water as reactants and produce oxygen and biomolecules as products
of the photosynthetic reactions.
• The chemical energy that is converted during photosynthesis is stored in
the bonds of the biomolecules that are produced.
• ATP is the molecule of energy for the entire living world.
Essential Questions
• What are the reactants and products of the photosynthetic reactions?
• What occurs during the light reactions of photosynthesis?
• What occurs during the light independent reactions of photosynthesis?
Targets
Vocabulary—photoautotroph, heterotroph, ATP, pigment, chlorophyll, chloroplast,
thylakoid membrane, photosynthesis, photolysis, light reactions, electron transport
chain, ATP synthetase, NADP+, Calvin Cycle (light independent reactions), rubisco,
PGAL, CO2 fixation, oxidize and reduce.
1. Know the two sets of reactions that occur in photosynthesis and where
each set takes place.
2. Trace the energy from sunlight that is absorbed by chlorophyll through the
conversions of the light dependent reactions.
3. Trace the energy from the ATP molecule through the conversions of the
light independent reactions.
4. Trace the H+ and e- from breakdown of water to the formation of glucose.
5. Trace the C atoms from the breakdown of CO2 to the formation of
glucose.
6. Account for the formation of O2.
