How Do plants eat??
 We all know that plants don’t just get up and make
some food. But they are living things… so they have to
eat somehow!
Well plants eat by the
process of…
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Stage 1: Capturing the suns energy
 The Plant’s Chlorophyll captures the energy that
the sun gives off
 This stage occurs mostly in the leaves
 The color of the leaves come from pigments.
 The main pigment in photosynthesis is the
Cholorphyll, located in the chloroplast
Vocabulary:
Pigments- colored chemical compounds that absorb
light
Chlorophyll- The main pigment in chloroplasts
Stage 2: Using the energy
 The Plant uses the energy to make sugars.
 The plant does this by using water and carbon dioxide.
The roots absorb the water and the water moves up to
the plant’s leaves
 Carbon dioxide eneters the plant through the stomata
and moves into the chloroplasts
 Water and carbondioxide a series of chemical
reactions
 The sugar that is produced are used by the plant cells
for energy
Stage 3: Carbon Dioxide is fixed
and sugar is produced
 In this stage, chlorophyll in the plant's cells absorbs
light waves that hit the green portions of the plant.
 The capturing of the light energy allows the
chlorophyll to pull electrons from water.
 This creates extra oxygen from the water to be released
as waste from the process. The electrons set off the
generation of ATP to create energy for the cell.
Photosynthesis can be summed up by the photosynthesis
equation
The arrow is the connections between the raw material and the
products
