Course Outline – Math 8
2016-2017
GOALS FOR STUDENTS
The main goals of mathematics education are to prepare students to:
1. Use mathematics confidently to solve problems.
2. Communicate and reason mathematically.
3. Appreciate the value mathematics.
4. Commit themselves to lifelong learning.
5. Become mathematically literate adults, using mathematics to contribute to society.
At the completion of a program, students should have developed a positive attitude toward
mathematics and have a base knowledge and skills related to Number, Patterns and Relations, Shape
and Space, and Statistics and Probability.
CONTENT:
The common framework is arranged to four strands, each of significance. The four our listed below with
the general outcomes for each:
1. Number (Ch. 1,2,3,4, and 6; Sept.-Jan.)
Students will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of perfect squares and square roots, concretely, pictorially and
symbolically. (Limited to whole numbers)
-Determine the approximate square root of numbers that are not perfect squares. (Limited to whole
numbers)
-Demonstrate an understanding of percents greater than or equal to 0%, including greater than100%.
-Demonstrate an understanding of ratio and rate.
- Solve problems that involve rates, ratios and proportional reasoning.
-Demonstrate an understanding of multiplying and dividing positive fractions and mixed numbers
concretely, pictorially and symbolically.
2. Patterns and Relations (Ch. 9; Feb.)
Students will:
-Graph and analyze two –variable linear relations.
-Model and solve problems concretely, pictorially, and symbolically, using linear equations of the form;
ax=b, x/a=b, and a=0, ax+b=c, x/a+b=c and a=0, a(x+b)=c where a,b, and c are integers.
3. Shape and Space (Ch. 5, 7, and 11, Mar.-mid May)
Students will:
-Develop and apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems.
-Draw and construct nets for 3-D objects.
-Determine the surface area of rectangular prisms, right triangular prisms, and right cylinders.
-Develop and apply formulas for determining the volume of rectangular prisms, right triangular prisms,
and right cylinders.
-Draw and interpret top, front and side views of 3-D objects composed of right rectangular prisms.
-Demonstrate an understanding of congruence of polygons.
4. Statistics and probability (Ch. 8 and 10; mid May-mid June)
Students will:
-Critique ways in which data is presented in circle graphs, line graphs, bar graphs and pictographs.
-Solve problems involving the probability of independent events.
EVALUATION:
The year end mark will be calculated cumulatively. Students will write a final exam that will encompass
all the outcome from the grade 8 curriculum.
