MACC Science Questions For Use on March 2, 2015 Please Read Aloud: All of the questions in this match are 5-second questions, unless otherwise noted. Science questions that are problems will be read twice, with no repeats in the directed rounds. This is the first directed question for team A. 1A. Begin (Two of the three must be given: stigma, style, and ovary) This is the first directed question for team B. 1B. You have 20 seconds to answer this question. 2A. A steel pipe weighing 240 grams will be replaced by one made of an aluminum alloy. The specific gravity of this steel is 8. Identify the following as a heterogeneous mixture, solution, compound, or element: paper. Begin (Heterogeneous mixture) This is the third directed question for team A. 3A. Which of the major types of mountains was formed when crust was pushed up by forces within the Earth and over time the sedimentary rock on top was eroded, leaving behind igneous and metamorphic rock beneath? Examples include the southern Rockies, the Black Hills, and the Adirondacks. Begin (Upwarped mountains) This is the third directed question for team B. 3B. Fungus diseases that attack this potassium-rich tropical fruit include Panama and Sigatoka. Name this fruit. Begin (The banana) This is the fourth directed question for team A. 4A. One mechanism of evolution is thought to occur when a small group of individuals leaves a population and establishes a new one in a geographically isolated region. What is the specific term for this mechanism? Begin (Genetic drift) This is the fourth directed question for team B. 4B. What is the name of the acid with the following formula: CH3COOH? Begin (Acetic acid) MACC Science Questions Page 2 This is the fifth directed question for team A. 5A. Libya's arid climate is made worse by the ghibli, a crop-destroying wind from what desert? Begin (Sahara) This is the fifth directed question for team B. 5B. In flowering plants, the stamen usually consists of two basic parts. Name these two parts. Begin (Both must be given: filament and anther) This is the sixth directed question for team A. 6A. Identify the following as a heterogeneous mixture, solution, compound, or element: milk. Begin (Heterogeneous mixture) This is the sixth directed question for team B. 6B. One mechanism of evolution is thought to occur when migrations of individuals from one group to another interbreed with the new population, contributing their genes to the gene pool. What is the specific term for this mechanism? Begin (Gene flow) This is the seventh directed question for team A. 7A. An example of a plant that's a parasite is which one that’s hung from ceilings at Christmas? Begin (Mistletoe) This is the seventh directed question for team B. 7B. A nucleus with an excess of neutrons is described as what, meaning it is spontaneously emitting particles? Begin (Radioactive) This is the eighth directed question for team A. 8A. What is the specific term for the recombinant DNA process in which cells are taken from the patient, altered by adding genetic material, and replaced in the patient? Begin (Gene therapy) This is the eighth directed question for team B. You have 20 seconds to answer this question. 8B. A steel pipe weighing 400 grams will be replaced with one made of an aluminum alloy. The specific gravity of this steel is 8, and the specific gravity of the alloy is 3. What is the weight, in grams, of the new pipe? (Read question again) Begin (150) This is the ninth directed question for team A. 9A. It helps in studying neutrons if you slow them down from near light speed to 15 mph in a block of what, also known as heavy hydrogen? Begin (Deuterium) MACC Science Questions Page 3 This is the ninth directed question for team B. 9B. Which of the major types of mountains was formed when huge tilted blocks of rocks were separated from the surrounding rock by deep fissures in the earth? Examples include the Grand Tetons and the Sierra Nevadas. Begin (Fault-block mountains) This is the tenth and final directed question for team A. 10A. What is the name of the acid with the following formula: H2C2O4? Begin (Oxalic acid) This is the tenth and final directed question for team B. 10B. What Hawaiian wind shares its four-letter name with a type of coffee? Begin (Kona) That ends the portion of the match with directed questions. Coaches, if you have any team member substitutions, please send those team members to the stage at this time. (Note: Allow time for substitutes to be seated, introduce substitute team members.) No form of conferring is allowed during the tossup portion of the match. Conferring includes sharing of written or verbal information or signals. Please remove all written material from your team tables. Writing is not permitted during tossup rounds, except in the math round. We will now have ten tossup questions. Remember, the person who buzzes in must give the answer immediately. Please wait until I recognize the team before you give an answer. The penalty for buzzing in early and giving a wrong answer is minus 2 points, and the question will then be reread in its entirety to the other team. This is the first tossup question. 1. What subatomic particles come in six kinds and each kind comes in three “colors”? Begin (Quarks) This is the second tossup question. 2. Those elements in Group 17 in the modern periodic table system, or group VIIA (seven - A) in the traditional periodic table system, belong to which family? Begin (Halogens) This is the third tossup question. 3. They shared the Nobel Prize in 1962 for their proposed model for the structure of DNA. Name these two famous scientists. Begin (Both must be given: James D. Watson and Francis H. C. Crick) This is the fourth tossup question. 4.
