MACC/SWAC Math Questions Both teams(A and B) are given the first ten questions. These are all 20-second questions. These are then answered by writing the answer on the answer sheet. When time has been called, the team captain will hand in one, and only one, answer sheet. Make sure the answer is circled if the sheet contains more than the answer—for example if you have worked the problem on the answer sheet. Once sheets are received by the emcee, none can be changed or exchanged. There are only ten directed questions. Each team may score points on each directed question. This is the first directed question. 1. The temperature T in degrees Celsius is given by the function T of d = 35d +20 where d is the depth in kilometers. What would the depth in kilometers be if the temperature were 370 degrees Celsius? Begin (10) This is the second directed question. 2. Write an equation in slope-intercept form of a line that has a slope of negative one half and 1 7 passes through point (1, 3). Begin y x 2 2 This is the third directed question. 3. A 17.6 mile- long tunnel was completed costing $210 million. What is the average cost per mile in scientific notation to two decimal places? Begin ($1.19 x 107) This is the fourth directed question. 4. x2 4 (read as f of x equals the fraction with numerator x x 2 4x 5 squared minus 4 and denominator x squared minus four x minus 5)? Begin (the set of all real numbers not equal to negative one or five) What is the domain of f(x) = This is the fifth directed question. 5. Given that f(x) = x2 - 3 (read as f of x equals x squared minus three) and g(x) = 2x + 1 (read as g of x equals two x plus one) what is the value of (f + g)(5) (read as the quantity f plus g of five)? Begin (33) This is the sixth directed question. 6. Solve the system of equations 3c – 7d = -3 and 2c + 6d = -34. Begin (d = -3 and c = - 8) This is the seventh directed question. 7. 3 17 or What is the value of x in 2x2 – 1 = 3x? Begin 4 3 17 4 and 3 17 4 MACC/SWAC Math Questions - Page 2 This is the eighth directed question. 8. Multiply (4x4y – 7x2y + 3y) times (2y – 3x2y). Begin (-12x6y2 + 29x4y2 – 23x2y2 + 6y2) This is the ninth directed question. 9. 3 4 What is the reciprocal of 3 ? Begin 4 15 This is the tenth directed question. 10. If the points P (-2, 3), Q (2, 5), and R (2, 3) are the vertices of a triangle, what is the area of the triangle in square units? Begin (4) That ends the portion of the match with directed questions. Coaches, if you have any team member substitutions, please send those team members to the stage at this time. (Note: Allow time for substitutes to be seated, introduce substitute team members.) Please remove all written notes from your team tables. Any new material written after the first question begins may NOT be shared in any way. No form of conferring is allowed during the tossup portion of the match. Conferring includes sharing of written or verbal information or signals. We will now have ten tossup questions. They are all 10-second questions. Remember, the person who buzzes in must give the answer immediately. Please wait until I recognize the team before you give an answer. The penalty for buzzing in early and giving a wrong answer is minus 2 points, and the question will then be reread in its entirety to the other team. This is the first tossup question. 1. What types of numbers are capable of being expressed as an integer or a quotient of integers, excluding those with zero as a denominator? Begin (rational or rational number) This is the second tossup question. 2. Name the property illustrated by the equation (5 + 7) + 8 = 8 + (5 +7) (read as the quantity five plus seven the quantity plus eight equals eight plus the quantity five plus seven). Begin (The commutative property of addition – ask for more information if they just say commutative property) This is the third tossup question. 3. How many sides does a regular polygon have if the sum of its interior angles is 180o ? Begin (3) This is the fourth tossup question. 4. What are two angles whose measures have a sum of 90o? Begin (complementary or complementary angles) MACC/SWAC Math Questions - Page 3 This is the fifth tossup question. 5. If two lines are perpendicular what is the product of their slopes? Begin (-1) This is the sixth tossup question. 6. Express 4i 3 48 (read as the square root of negative forty-eight) in terms of i “eye” Begin This is the seventh tossup question. 7. What is the coordinate plane composed of the x axis and the y axis meeting at the origin dividing the plane into four quadrants? Begin (Cartesian coordinate plane or the Cartesian plane) This is the eighth tossup question. 8. 5 3 Write the equation of the line 10x + 4y = 3 in slope-intercept form. Begin y x 2 4 This is the ninth tossup question. 9. Solve for x: x 12 x (read as the square root of the quantity negative x plus twelve the square root equals x) Begin (3) This is the tenth and final tossup question. (Emcee note – if match is tied after this question go to the three tie breakers at the end of these questions – use all three, even if tie is broken on first or second question!) 10. If the discriminant of a quadratic equation is greater than zero, how many and what type of solutions are possible? Begin (two different real number solutions) (SWAC Emcees – Ask if there are any appeals that need to be noted.) EMERGENCY QUESTIONS (To be used in an emergency only –DO NOT USE AS EXTRA TIE BREAKERS – but they can be used in place of tie breakers as they would be used if a question has a mistake, if the emcee “flubs” a question, etc.): You have 20 seconds to answer this question: 1. Two freight trains leave the same city at right angles. The first train travels at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour. In one hour the trains are 100 kilometers apart. How fast is the second train traveling in kilometers per hour? Begin (80) MACC/SWAC Math Questions – Page 4 You have 20 seconds to answer this question: 2. What is the equation of the line which passes through the point (8, -2) and has y-intercept 7 5? Begin y x 5 8 TIE BREAKERS(To be used in cases of tie games – use all three questions, even if the tie is broken with the first or second question; in case teams are still tied at the end of these three questions – the game remains a tie.): This is the first tiebreaker question. You have 10 seconds to answer the question. 1. What is the slope of a vertical line? Begin (undefined) This is the second tiebreaker question. You have 10 seconds to answer the question. 2. For any real numbers a, b, and c, a(bc) = (ab)c (read as a times the quantity b times c equals the quantity a times b the quantity times c) represents which property of multiplication? Begin (associative) This is the third tiebreaker question. You have 10 seconds to answer the question. 3. What two types of numbers make up the set of real numbers? Begin (rational and irrational)
