Dichotomous Key: Invertebrate Phyla A dichotomous key is written in a series of two choices to be made about the anatomy of an animal you are observing. Students will be able to these questions to identify a particular invertebrate by their physical features. Fish Lab: Form and Function This lab provides the students with a basic overview of the three main Classes of fish, Agnatha, Chondrichthyes, and Osteichthyes including characteristics and basic morphology. Adaptations of fish are discussed with a focus on buoyancy, locomotion, sensing the environment, and velocity. In the lab activities, students will get to practice identifying fish found in the lab and in our display tanks. Students will also take part in a fish dissection. This lab will link back to the teaching vessels overview on fisheries, harvesting technology, and conservation. Marine Mammal Overview (Harp Seals) This lab focuses on the physiological, behavioural and husbandry of our resident Harp seals. Students will get the chance to work hands-on with the seals in husbandry activities and behavioral studies Fish Husbandry Fish husbandry involves various aspects of caring for fishes, including food preparation, measuring water quality (oxygen, nitrogen) and biosecurity. Students will get an opportunity to assist with the day to day activities associated with holding aquatic marine organisms. Some of the local fish species will be observed. Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystems Students will be provided with an overview of a number of marine ecosystems. By examining a number of animals they will determine how they adapt to these environments.
