Annual Report of the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics (BMG). I will summarize a few highlights of 2008 and encourage you to review the report at your leisure for further details. Dr. Geoff Hicks was named Director of the Regenerative Medicine Program and the first recruit was appointed to our Department. Welcome Dr. Mojgan Rastegar, we wish you much success and look forward to working with you in the coming years. The search for additional members has been very active so stay tuned for additional announcements in 2009! Drs. Spencer Gibson and Jeffrey Wigle were awarded Manitoba Health Research Council (MHRC) Chairs. Congratulations to you both, the awards were well deserved! Our ability to capture 2 of the 3 Chairs in this first MHRC competition to acknowledge, support and retain Manitoba’s best health researchers is an excellent reflection of our Department. Dr. Louise R. Simard Professor and Head Congratulations Dr. Francis Amara for obtaining Tenure! The hard work of our Faculty brought in over four million research dollars. Dissemination of our basic and clinical research resulted in 58 publication, up from last year. Dr. Albert Chudley received the Manitoba Service Excellence Award and the Founders Award for the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists. Dr. Cheryl Greenberg received the Scholastic Award from the Manitoba Medical Association and the Michael Wright Award for Community Leadership. Dr. Louise Simard received the Dr. David Green Award from Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Dr. Emöke Szathmáry obtained two honorary Doctor of Law degrees from York (February 2008) and McMaster (June 2008) Universities. Join me in applauding these distinctions! It goes without saying that the successes of our Faculty members depend upon the excellence of our graduate students. We awarded four Doctoral (Shahrzad Jalalai, Dianna Martin, Francisco Mendoza and Anton Uvarov) and 6 Master’s (Yi Heng (Henry), Shauna Loewen, Iran Rashedi, Anoushe Sekhavat, Yongyao Tan and Duy Truong) degrees in 2008. Dr. Dianna Martin received the 2008 Research Day E.L. Drewry Memorial Award. Francisco Mendoza received the Merck Frosst Canada Inc. Award in Cell Biology. A significant proportion of our students successfully competed for local, provincial and national studentships as well as having received other important honours. Congratulations to Diana Joy Armistead, Evan Booy and Paula Espino for their success in the CIHR Studentship competition and to Bojan Drobic for his NCIC award! Megan Webb Azad received the CIHR National Poster Competition Silver Award as well as the Manitoba Medical Services Foundation award. Sumit Sandhu received the Dean of Medicine Poster Award and George Skliris was given the MHRC Post Doctorate Fellow Award; both of these awards were Manitoba Competitions. In closing, we have much to be proud of and it is hoped that our Department will continue to demonstrate excellence in research, teaching, administration and outreach endeavours. Your hard work has not gone unnoticed and your achievements have been posted on our web site in a timely manner. I look forward to 2009’s endeavours! Page 3 of 35 Organizational Chart Dr. L. Page 16 of 35 2008 ANNUAL REPORT WRHA Program in Genetics and Metabolism The Program in Genetics and Metabolism is a primary Program within the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA). This status was achieved in September 2004. The Genetics and Metabolism University affiliations include the Departments of Pediatrics and Child Health, and Biochemistry and Medical Genetics. The Genetics and Metabolism mandate of the program is the provision of exemplary clinical service to all patients and Programs of the WRHA. In the discharge of this mandate, the Program endeavours to establish a responsive system of service delivery. In 2008, approximately 5,500 patients were seen through the service. What is new in 2008: • New clinic and office space has been identified and we plan to move into the additional space in the Spring 2009. • Nikki Lwiwski, one of the genetic counselling assistants left to take further education. We welcome Lisa Levesque to our Program • As a WRHA Program, we report to senior management. Our VP was Mr. Mark Nescar, who left the WRHA to work for a private company. We thank Mark for his short but effective time with us. We welcomed Mr. Milton Sussman as our WRHA Team leader. • Our senior resident Julie Richer successfully completed her training and is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa at CHEO. Human Resources The Genetics and Metabolism Program is currently provided by medical staff, genetic counsellors, genetic assistants and administrative and secretarial support staff, who are primarily located at the HSC site. A year end wind-up party was held in the spring and was a great way to finish off the academic year. Activities began again in the fall when students from BMG and Immunology participated in a paintball outing. Additionally, a Halloween party was held that included a costume contest, pumpkin carving, games and food. The annual Christmas party was a great success and included gingerbread house decorating as well as a gift exchange. In February we had an event centered around the Festival du Voyageur to give the students a taste of the French Canadian culture in Manitoba A typical voyageur-lunch was provided which included bannock and pea-soup and students had time to socialize. The year end wind-up party in the spring was combined with an awards ceremony, where the best presentations of the past departmental seminar series were awarded. In September the new academic year was started with a welcome-party which we also used to elect the new student representatives of the department. Page 20 of 35 Report from the GSA Rep: Meghan Azad attended all of the monthly Health Sciences Graduate Students Association (HSGSA) meetings this year. In September the position was taken up by Cordula Buse. Both Meghan and Cordula helped organize HSGSA social events such as the Valentine’s Wine & Cheese, Spring it up, Pubmed Night etc. As HSGSA councillor, Meghan served on the Mentorship Award Committee and Distinguished Lectureship committee. Finally, Meghan and Cordula prepared and submitted the two departmental grant applications to receive the semi-annual cash disbursement from the GSA. Report from the Treasurer: The BMG Graduate Students Association account opened with a balance of $434.34 in January 2008. After funding various student social activities we closed with a balance of $279.36 by December 2008. Saving policies were implemented to ensure the account will retain sufficient funds for future activities. Report from the Graduate Student Awards & Academic Standards Student Representative: Teralee Burton met with this Committee to discuss student award applications to rank applications for University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship, Manitoba Health Research Council, and the Health Sciences studentships. As the Academic Standards Student Representative, she met with the Academic Standards committee to discuss applications for tenure and/or promotion and cross-appointment to the department. Sports: This was a quiet year for our department. In the past we organized teams for a variety of sports including floor hockey, volleyball and soccer, playing in the intramural leagues. The newly elected sports reps are looking forward to putting some teams together in the coming winter.
